Hi All,
I am in San Diego and I have a great general mechanic who does most all my work. My mustang needs to get looked at by someone a little more specific to Mustangs -I think. It idles rough when stopped in gear, but idles smooth as can be in Park or Neutral or while driving. Mechanic checked everything, but found nothing. No codes or other issues, all service is up to date. Just says it’s an old car. At all stops and waits I have to shift to neutral, otherwise it’s a royal rumble. Course it cruises like a dream, good gas milage, just doesn’t like stop signs, lights or drive-thru’s in Drive. Ideas, siggestions, shops?!?! Thanks!

Had this since new? I have gotten two really good deals on cars that had the wrong cam and torque converter combo.

Clean the maf and throttle body, check the plugs, and is it tuned?

mad and throttle body service recent, will go through the records for the plugs, I Did buy a car that came with a file cabinet of records. This car had/ currently still has tires from Worthington Ford. Every single thing ever done to this car was at the dealership that sold it, even have receipts for light bulbs!!! It’s cherry, only reason the owner sold it was he grew too old to drive it. Does have dings from doors, I am taking care of those currently. CarFax confirmed zero accidents. So here I am, with this issue. Thank you for the input, will keep trying to resolve. Even if it means taking it back to the dealership?!?! -Nightmare, I know.

What year Mustang, is it a V6/V8 V?, auto/manual tranny, any motor/electronic/performance upgrades???

All we know is your Mustang doesn't idle in gear...throw us a bone here.

I do believe this is the V6 forum, if not it’s an unmodded 2006 Auto- V6. Manuals don’t have a Designated Drive gear, I do prefer manuals… specifically for this reason. My manuals have never had wierd issues like automatics, but thinking this is my “forever car”. I figured the 55-60-70-80+ yr old me, might prefer an automatic. It’s purely a cruiser for the So Cal cool evenings with the top down and my dog in the passenger seat when the blond-of-the-month is not with me. Even then, I wish the dog was sitting up front, much better conversations … -Ha Kidding!!!! ;-)

Check your motor mounts, if they are worn out, it could be allowing the engine to shake when idling in drive. The trans is putting a bit of torque on it that is not there in park or neutral. That vibration could feel like a rough idle.

You posted in a Regional-SouthWest sub-forum (not V6), but that's Ok. Referring to your mechanic, when you stated they checked "everything" - pls. define? Did they check all the vacuum lines, fuel system (pressure check), complete electrical diagnostics (grounds/shorts)? How many miles on the motor?

I doubt they went that far, because there is not anything actually wrong with the car, I drive it daily, just rolled over 200K. The mechanic just said it drives fine and the rumble is because it’s an old car. My área doesn’t have many mustangs of this vintage, or any old cars. Most cars he see’s are at the oldest 5, maybe 8 yrs old and newer. So he just passed it off as runs good and looks great for an old car, enjoy it! All the usual checks out. No codes, no dash lights and he doesn’t rip into engines it’s a repair / maintainence shop. Very busy shop, Never keeps cars overnight. Great shop will install anything you take them, my oil changes are 12 bucks, I take in all my parts, fluids. It’s awesome, but doesn’t do tear downs. I think my post was moved… I have never read the “regional” section.
