Simple question, where should I weld in resonators? Ive got a 2010 GT with longtubes into factory H-pipe and Black Widow race venoms. At about 2000-2700 rpms (4.10 gears highway rpms) I have some pretty terrible rasp and drone inside the cabin. Im thinking of welding in some 9.5" Vibrant resonators (12" total) which I can fit either in the area that steps inward on the 45 degree angle from the collectors into the H-pipe. Or I can weld them in between the H-pipe but before the exhaust curves up over the rear axle. Anyone have some insight as to what would be best to eliminate or at least reduce the drone/rasp from 2000-2700 rpm? The section between the H-pipe and the curve over the rear axle I can also fit in the longer 16-18" resonator that are available. Ive also considered a Helmholtz style resonator, but I think Ill have a hard time finding room for them since I would need 2, (1 on each side). If I did end up welding in the 12" resonators between the collectors and H-pipe would that be too much heat for the resonators and burn them up very quick or not really?

Would be excellent if someone had somewhat the same setup as me and had the same problem that they fixed and could chime in.

Also are Vibrant resonators good? If not who makes good resonators?

I run headers and flowmaster outlaws and I put a couple of old school cherry bombs on my pipes right before the axle. Can't find any pics.

before the rear axle was the stock location for resonators

I've also heard that they perform better if they are staggered, i.e. - one a little further upstream/downstream from the other. But I don't know how much to stagger them by

I like 07 Boss's idea. I had the same so-called Vibrant resonator in 3" on my Durango, and it did pretty much nothing, but it also turned out to be a Chinese knock-off, so no disrespect to Vibrant. Using the longest resonator that will fit will give you the best result. On my '06 GT I have DNA headers, high-flow cats, an X-pipe, and a JBA axle-back and I couldn't be happier. with it. I have 3:73's and turn about 2200 rpm @70. Nice exotic sound, but it's not obnoxious inside the cabin, and no drone anywhere in the rev range. Sounds a lot better than the Flowmasters I had on it previously. Leads me to believe the muffler choice is pretty important.

That's correct, and the more you stagger them the better so that the exhaust pulses from each cylinder bank reach their respective mufflers out of phase and prevent the dreaded drone.

On my 2010 GT auto, (with small roush M90 blower) I installed JBA ceramic coated LT's and mating JBA catted H section. Mufflers are FRRP SS FRS-500's. That combo is FN loud, way too loud..and bad drone at 2K RPM...and that's just cruising, or foot into it just a bit, and not getting anywhere near getting into boost.

So in went the pypes SS M80's resonators. Welded in, just before the rear axle. Problems solved. Mine are not staggered. They really should be staggered a few inches. I still have a bit of drone at 1.9 k rpm.
Staggering the 4" diam M80 resonators is a bit of a trick, since they hang low. You want one of em as far back towards the axle as practical, with the 2nd resonator just 1-2" forward. At idle, I have this real low freq rumble. If I hold a large empty cardboard box, by one flap, a few feet back at an angle from rear exhausts, the box vibrates. It's almost like a subsonic sound.

The pypes M80's, SS, at the time were just $44.00 each from AM. (304 SS, still shiny). The flanges were cut off at each end in a bandsaw, then the M80's were welded into place. IE: no clamps used.

Did you weld those in or just cut/clamp? I’ve considered adding some but lacking a welder I either have to cut/clamp or pay someone and well.. I’m cheap.

I haven’t added them to my car but I added some to a z71 I had a while back. I just cut & clamped but they worked perfect. The good clamps that circle the whole pipe are rock solid once tightened up. As far as resonators they did help some but if you are trying to quiet down a loud exhaust they only help a little.

My friends dad owns a muffler shop so I had them welded in for like $50 and pizza for the shop.

I have some stainless 2.5" in/out glass pack style (perforated core) mufflers off ebay that I put in right off the back of the H pipe. About 12" long overall. I don't know how much they helped but they did cut it enough that I'm running chambered mufflers without it giving me a headache.

Hello new to The forum but I am going through the same issue with a 2005 Mustang GT I have a Roush supercharger with a magnum XL tremec 6-speed with pypes long tube headers pypes high flow cats X pipe and then MRT exhaust cat backs. 5th gear is not too bad but 6th Gear is definitely a drone wondering if anyone has had any luck with different Cat-Back exhaust to quiet it down within the cab and wondered how you made out with your car.

I just found out this year that factory mufflers with longtubes sounds incredible and cuts the drone down to barely above stock levels.
