I would like to get a stock diameter/mounting filter but longer/taller than the stock one. I think there is one but don't remember the threads dia/number from working in parts store some years ago.

Thank you Jeremy, after I posted this I located that dimension and will have to take a trip into town and look through the filter selection. Later, Dale

And what is the purpose of the longer filter? Just more filter membrane, less restrictive?

Really only 2 thing for sure could be said it increases your oil capacity and your filter life being as there is more volume and surface area for filtration.

However other benefits of this can be derived such as higher thermal reserve and oil life as well. And more cooling surface area of the filter to reject heat from the oil as it filters etc. Now if your just adding a slightly larger filter maybe 4-12 ounces this may be marginal.

The other means is an oil filter relocation kit. Not only does it move the filter for clearances in that area and make access to it super easy for filter changes but does the things mentioned above better. The kit I made used a twice as large Motorcraft fl-1a filter with 3/4-16 thread adaptor, and moved it down under the headlight out of the engine bay where it sees more airflow under the car behind the bumper away from engine bay and radiator heat. With the car up to temp the filter, adaptors and lines are noticeabley too hot to touch so in a way also acts as a cooler as the adaptors lines and larger filter act as a means to pull heat from oil as it's being filtered. Also it's a significant increase in volume the kit added almost a full quart 32 ounces of capacity to the system.

If you were just looking for a better filter with more filtering capacity, FRPP makes one. I think it’s a little fatter, not sure if it’s taller

One thing to check with a taller filter is clearance to the sway bar. In my case (after market sway bar) there's only about an inch of room before I run into interference issues. I ended up getting a remote filter setup but haven't installed yet (may get around to it this year depending on workload).

I think I have always run stock type filters. I've had a couple of set ups with remote filters but never ran anything special as far as filters.
