My first grand child to own a Mustang. My 15 year old granddaughter (Layla - aka the one who loves me) has gotten her first car and it happens to be a race red 3.7 V6 Mustang. She really wanted a GT, but parents! She goes to autox and rides with me and anyone that will let her every month. And is chomping at the bit to start driving in the events herself. She hasn’t gotten her license yet, so not yet allowed.

Anyway I’ll be posting pics and following her modding of the the car in this thread as well as asking some questions of others that have knowledge of the 3.7.

So far she has added some accent lighting under dash and rear seats, and repaired a loose/broken mirror and repaired the front valance.

She wants to add black wheels, tint and lower it an inch or so. She also wants to add some striping, maybe Boss 302 type or something.

She could have some custom Boss 227 decals made and add all of the other upgrades that were specific to the Boss 302. As far as engine upgrades go, an aftermarket tune would suffice. She could swap in a pair of axlebacks (Boss 302 used take offs perhaps) for the sound. Then she'd have a car that would be totally unique (the world's only Boss 227) but a lot of fun to drive. It would probably handle even better than a Boss 302 because it has less weight at the front.

Well that is all good ideas, and that’s exactly the look she wants. However it wouldn’t be the only Boss 227. There was a guy in this forum at one time that had a 3.7 done up that way. He caught a lot of flack for it. Of course if I remember correctly he was quite obnoxious.

It does need a little better sound and a better sound system.

We can make any custom decals she wants as long as they’re not to big.

Had to edit the title. My G-daughter informed me this morning that her car was a 2012, not a 14.

Looking for a muffler setup to give Layla’s car a little sound without making it sound like bumble bee or a saw. Any suggestions for 3.7?

Borla always sound great. My Magnaflow Competition Catback sounds great. I get many compliments on it. I find Roush sound too raspy.

Lucky kid - my first car was a 20 year old four door sedan rotted up to the door handles!

Yeah, but it is 10 years old with over 100k on the odometer. By the standard when I grew up, that was a $100, worn out pos. Of course they last much longer nowadays.

My first one I bought myself in 1976 for $60. It was a ‘64 Ford Fairlane with a 260 V8 that had de-foulers in 6 of the 8 plug holes.

Great info sir, thank you. Do you run Borla mufflers on a V6?

I was going to get the S Type catback but the Magnaflow Competition Catback was cheaper and larger piping. American Muscle has great videos of various mufflers and catback comparisons to stock so you can make a better choice.

This is mine.

I have a set of stock 3V mufflers. I wonder what they would sound like on the 3.7. It would take some work to make them fit, but…

I’ve heard them on the 05-09 v6 cars and they weren’t terrible.

I have Flowmster 40 series, muffler shop installed on my 14 3.7. Kinda like Goldilocks, several are too loud, bordering on obnoxious, and others are, like, why'd you bother to change? This option hit the sweet spot, price and sound. Watch for take-off tire/wheel combos. The base GT wheel tires used to be very easy to find and you could always paint or powder coat the wheels black.

Got any sound clips?

We have a nice set of 18x9.5 PF-01s to go on it.

I have the Magnaflow Street series catback on my '12 V6. Been 5 years with them and they haven't failed to please. There is no drone and they are quiet enough not to raise the ire of the noise police or asshole neighbors and when you get on it they liven up nicely. They also won't fail an emissions test if that's something you need to consider now or in the future. At least they don't fail here in Canada.

Found a set of 19x9.5 SVE wheels in black today for cheap. She really wanted black ones anyway. Clean set with only a couple spots of curb rash that can easily be fixed. Us and her dad went in halves for them for her for Christmas. She’ll be happy!
