Lol been there and done that and have the “bent pushrod” t-shirt.

How about adjusting the lash on poly/locks on a running engine with hot oil splashing all over you? Ahh good times. Lol

Yeah I never had the luxury of having an extra set of Pontiac valve covers. My brother would hold a sheet of cardboard over the top of the rockers but sooner than later I would get burned. Literally… lol :)

My recollection of adjusting the hydraulic lifters on a 71 Pontiac 455 was something like, tighten the adjustment nut until the engine starts to bog, back off a specified amount, and then lock it. Maybe that was just a "shade tree" mechanic procedure...

You are spot on but it was ticking then quarter turn to lock it down.

I raced Pontiacs in my youth then switched over to Ford during the 5.0L era of new FI muscle cars. But sure as hell LOVED them Big Blocks!

I was a junkyard junky by the time I got my driver's license. I scoured the yards for Ford parts. I knew what block to look for, what rods, what heads, what 9 inch chunks. Aftermarket was non existent for Ford's, except for boss stuff and 4v Cleveland's, which were considered exotic. It was a lot of fun trying to bamboozle a yard out of rare parts for cheap. When I would pick up a set of '70 351w heads I would always get the valve covers. Those valve covers wouldn't fit over poly locks. But they were great for setting lash.
