    Just be sure not to rotate the engine while the valves are free. Wouldn't take much pressure to mess up a valve.

    Thanks. Honestly, you can just rotate the engine so the piston in the cylinder you're working on is at TDC, and the valves can't physically drop into the cylinder. No air pressure required. You can also take some nylon braided rope and feed that through the spark plug hole if you want cheap...

    Here's a pic of the set screw in the tensioner. Not sure if this should be removed while installed on the car, or left alone. It doesn't seem related to the knocking sound, but since we're talking about the tensioner as a possible culprit to the alternator issue, here it is.
