+1 GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh is all I've used in my 03 Cobra T-56 and my shifts have always been dependable and notch free. I occasionally get kicked out of gear, but that' because of a bad granny shift.

For all the hassle the MT-82 has been causing, I personally would probably go the ROD route including the price of fabrication and tranny plus the cost of a new GT just to be reliable and happy. But you are correct in that it would be a project not for the faint of heart.
Beadlocks will have a more even clamping load than just straight screws thanks to the ring disk. With straight screws you MAY run the risk of tearing the tire.
