2005-2009 STOCK Shifter extender

Ok, so I surfed the heck out of this here and otherwise. Didn't find much that would really move the shift knob over and back.

I'd thrown on a clutch pedal extender due to being a tall crip. Well, not that tall. 6'2". Anyway, I love the clutch extender; lets me put the seat all the way back and that helps a LOT with the new hinge (hip) when getting in and out... and with lotsa' knee clearance to the dash.

But I dislike reaching for a short (stock) shifter. No intention of going aftermarket shifter 'cause Pennzoil Syncromesh solved all my TR3650 problems. The stuff is a freakin' miracle in a bottle. Yeah, I tried RP trans fluid and it helped maybe 1/10th as much as Pennz. Opinions vary; just sayin what worked for my 'stang.

So I just bought this ricer abortion in fleabay:

It's ridiculously long (140mm). I got it dirt cheap. It's supposedly stainless steel (stainless is ridiculously easy to weld as you'll know if you ever ran a bead) and black coated - pic looks like paint - easily stripped for welding. 12x1.25mm pitch, of course, like stock shifter.

My plan to get the shifter so it isn't such a dumbass long reach for 1st and 3rd with seat back:

Well, 5+ inches is crazy, IMO. I mean, like Big Daddy Ed Roth "Rat Fink" award winner. I might screw it on that long and take a pic just for laughs.

I'm gonna cut out their bend as it is not steep enough for me and shorten it by 2 or 3". Angle it about 45; throw some eyewash grinding and finishing on it as one of my "easy cripple recovering projects".

Jam nut it in place and see if I hate it. I don't drag race or road race, so it might be what I want with a DD.

Pics of obvious mods later.

I'm already using a generic "hurst look" white 5 speed shift knob, so obviously I won't be taking the stock shift knob and angling the snot out of it. There are limits to how much rice I'll eat. OTOH, red calipers coming up. Dammit, I wish I didn't like red calipers. Guess I'll have to learn to live with the well deserved (?) derision on that.

Good to know. Thanks!

Still vainly imagining I'm going to start a trend here. :roflmao:

Shark might kick me out for keeps for this one!

edit:

Just wait: It'll show up as tubing instead of solid rod. Then I'll be scrounging to borrow a GTAW machine instead of my Dad's stick welder and some old school gov't contract 'Brutus A' or supermissile welding rod...

Why the bleep did I sell my Hobart CyberTig 300? Jeez, I thought I had a good reason but it all sounds lame now. I've asked myself that question at least 20 times since 2005. What a nice old (GIANT) antique tig welding machine. Industrial strength, old world quality. Sigh. Alas, hard wired requirement, 1100 pounds and a porta crane to move; been all over the US since then. Yeah, excuses always sound weak.

It's the giant welder indicated by the red arrow in the following pic. Try to ignore the rodney (31 A bone Tudor); the chassis build and the 4" chop on that one were just a couple of the many jobs the big ol' antique welder helped me with. You can see the torch cooling water recirculator tank sitting on top of the machine behind the arrow. Yeah, one could question the reservoir location; but I could barely reach it there so it's not like it would ever get tipped or broken.

Memories and all that rot. 'k, moving back to 74-81 years newer Fords; s197 'stang stuff, etc.

I agree I don't like the stock shifter placement and after market shifters don't help. I made my own shift arm. They bolt on with two bolts so it isn't hard to change all you have to do is pull the center consul out. The thread are 12mm x 1.75 from what I have seen.

Yet another great looking part you've built. I like the CF, too.

Thanks for the idea. I might give that a try when I'm able to pull the console and after my "shifter bandaid" attempt bombs.

Right now, I'm seeing 12x1.25 for OE shifter... will confirm a few places.

edit: So far, appears 1.25 thread pitch is correct for 2005-2009 with stock shifter. 1.75 TP is correct for 1983-2004.

You're probably right, but the GT500 uses 1.75 tpm and so do many of the aftermarket shifters kits like Steeda...

I've been using the billet shifter handle from steeda along with a steeda tri ax. everyone who drives my car says it's too high but i love it. now if they would make it offset like 908ssp's, it would be perfect.

GT 's and 07/09 GT500's use 12mm x 1.25, ( I have one) 10/12 GT500's use 10mm x 1.25

12mm x 1.75 is fairly std with aftermarket shifters. ( those using metric of coarse)
