I own a first edition actually. :)

Great read! Since you're a fan who do think was actually the finest P-38 pilot of the war? I know my choice.

I have to go with Richard Bong. He scored a lot of his kill early in the action, when Japan still good pilots fighting. I don't know how many kills he would have reached if they hadn't sent him home and he could have tackled the young inexperienced pilots of the last year of the war. It was such a tragedy that he was killed on that P-80 acceptance ride in 1945.

My pick is Tommy McGuire, he was right behind Bong for kills but when Bong was sent home on his war bonds tour Mcguire was grounded to make sure he didn't surpass Bongs score while he was on tour. Didn't want to steal the thunder from Bong.

Shortly after being sent back into combat McGuire made the mistake of trying to maneuver quickly at low altitude while still carrying wing tanks in order to engage an enemy aircraft and his P-38 went into the trees.

40 kills for Bong and 38 for Mcquire, obviously no way to know what would have happened if they hadn't grounded him but I really wish we would have found out.

Yes McGuire was very good. He got greedy and didn't want to drop his tanks and shorten his mission, he paid the price. I don't have to tell you what a fantastic airplane the P-38 was but it never got the press the other great fighters got because it was way under powered when it was initially introduced and then it was sent to the Pacific arena.

Normally when transitioning supersonic as I understand it. Certain extreme weather conditions may affect how visible it is or not it has been observed with aircraft traveling subsonic. Even if the airframe is traveling subsonic airflow over certain areas of the structure approach and may accelerate to supersonic velocities. I would think 100mph (about 86 knots) is pretty far from that tho but I would guess that depends on the airflow and conditions..

And I am no Aeronautical Engineer... nor have I ever broken the sound barrier

Looks like a vapor cone that is formed due to low pressure that can happen in subsonic flight. If you have ever been on an airplane and you noticed a cloud quickly appear on the wing and then dissapear that would be similar to the vapor cone. A B-52 has a top speed of something like 620-650MPH while the sped of sound is 750MPH at sea level as mentioned earlier. It could have formed if he was going as fast as possible since IIRC he would be flying in what is known as transonic velocity.

Although I could have my information mixed up since as I too am not an aeronautics engineer. Since we are talking about airplane porn let me go grab some from my tumblr.

It is funny, the Air Force keeps trying to get rid of it, conflicts where it shines keep popping up! They say the F-35 at 80 to 120 mil a copy can do the same job, LOL!

Just goes to show no one is perfect. Not sure if it was greed or just overconfidence though.

Wasn't another issue with the P-38 that it didn't do well in the cold European climate? I seem to recall a lot of issues with cold cockpits and icing. Didn't really come into it's own until it was used in the Pacific.
