I track my Mustang since 2 years at my local track and my bearing/seal blew up at the last session on the right side. Oil is leaking from the seal, and much oil soaking everywhere around the axle vent.

My local track is short, and everything heat really high, especially the brakes.

Which oil you guys use in your differential ?

Sounds like maybe your vent was too restrictive. Maybe it's time to get a better axle breather/catch can.

Oil depends on the differential. Do you have a Ford TrakLock, a Torsen, or something else?

Thanks for the hint, forgot to specify I have the OEM differential except 4.10 gear.

I made few search on the web, it seems there is a TSB for a kind of bulb vent... Maybe I'd have a catch can instead ?

What setup you guys are running ? Is there any stronger bearing/seals on the market, track oriented ?

Thanks !

Use this, built like a tank....and bigger than what it looks like.
http://shop.bobsautosports.com/Mustang-2005-14-axle-reservoir-KR-style-axle-reservoir.htm You won't be losing oil anymore. And their is not much gear oil for the differential and axle to begin with.

Toss the oem differential, it's junk. The oem differential also runs very hot, way too hot. Use an eaton tru-trac differential. Zero maintenance, doesn't run hot, and always applies tq to the wheel with the most traction. http://www.vmpperformance.com/Eaton-31-Spline-TrueTrac-Differential-for-05-14-8-p/dts-913a561.htm It has a 3.5:1 bias ratio. But you must use dino gear oil in it. No synthetics....and no friction modifier.

+1 for Eaton TrueTrac. Much lower maintenance, increased durability, and it has 90% of the T-2R's bias ratio at half the cost.

Note that if you use an Eaton TrueTrac or Torsen, you do NOT use friction modifier.

Thanks Pentalab. KR Style axle reservoir already ordered. I'm looking for a Trutrac or another diff now... Many expenses again, but I don't want to blow up all the car... When you track your car, better have the right mods.

My wife will kill me, again. :helpme::helpme: :D

Keep you posted guys on my choice. Thanks to all.

I'm sure these work but why spend that much for a simple vent. I put in a 90 deg brass fitting into the axle, a piece of hose up to the top of the 3rd link, a fuel filter at the end of the hose (keeps crap out) and hose clamped it to the flat on the top left side of the 3rd link bracket on the diff. This actually cost me nothing as I had everything in my garage. Its probably $10 to buy. I did this a while ago and it works fine.

One of the few times I will agree with Pentalab.

The OEM clutch style diff works poorly and generates a LOT of heat.

DSC_8499-M.jpg

We burned up several rear axle seals and bearings before we figured this out in ~2011.

DSC_0219-M.jpg

Even with the upgraded carbon disc packs we were killing the clutches in the TractionLok in "ones of days" of track use.

DSC_0220-M.jpg

We built a somewhat elaborate diff fluid catch can / vent system to deal with the super hot diff fluid boiling.

DSC_1604-S.jpg

We eventually upgraded to a Torsen T-2R diff and all of the diff fluid heat and leaks and spewing went away.

We also dropped a little bit of lap time on certain road courses that had some tight corners. Where we fought wheelspin before the car now hooked up!

We've used the Torsen T-2 and T-2R on several Mustangs but haven't had a chance to try the TruTrac yet (might put one in my shop truck).

On the recommendation of another shop we went with a WaveTrac diff in the 9" Ford rear of this tube framed 69 Camaro, which is running the same 345mm rear Hoosier we ran on the TT3 Mustang.

Hopefully we will get some track data on this car later this year.

If you really want to go heavy duty, you can also get the heavy duty version of the tru-trac. It uses 4 x pinion gears on each side, and a heavier casing. ( vs the 3 per side on the standard version). But the heavy duty version requires using 33 spline axles (vs the oem 31 spline ). For road course + auto cross, you don't need the hd version. The drag race folks, once they get down to a 1.4 sec 60', will opt for the heavier Differential...sticky tires + high hp, etc. http://www.vmpperformance.com/Eaton-33-Spline-TrueTrac-Differential-for-05-14-8-p/dts-913a701.htm At least it's another option.

Wow !!! Vorshlag what a complete and full answer ! Thanks !!

I got new bearing, seals, and catch can. Will install them asap....

At this moment, I'll try the catch can setup for next weeks and will upgrade the diff later... budget restriction.
