Greetings!

I wanted to share this information with others who may be wondering what I had been wondering myself since I bought my GT.

Problem:

I recently replaced my 07 GT manual with an 09 GT automatic (don't ask). I had been seriously disappointed with the overall performance of this car in direct comparison with my 5 speed GT. It generally felt lethargic in spite of the C&L CAI and canned SCT tune which I kept from my 07. The transmission was the main source of the aggravation because it was stubborn to downshift when I wanted to accelerate hard, often making the car feel miserably slow. I tried tweaking the user settings in the SCT X3 canned tune to no avail; even with the user-adjustable shift settings all the way up the car would never shift quick or firm enough to chirp the tires during upshifts.

Solution:

I ordered the torque tune from Bamachips. In short, this was easily the best $50 I have ever spent!

The car feels like a completely different animal. The throttle response is amazing and there is an incredible amount of low and mid-range torque. The car easily breaks my 20" tires loose at part-throttle in first gear now (never did that before). The tires chirp loudly on both the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshifts, even at 3/4 throttle.

Most importantly, the transmission always seems to be in the right gear now. Regardless of the vehicle speed when the throttle is cracked open, the car accelerates smartly, no longer bogging like before.

Bottom line:

Bamachips has their tune strategy spot-on for the automatic S197 Mustangs.

I hope this helps some other automatic owners take the plunge.

Thank you Doug and Matt at Bamachips!

Frank

This makes me even more excited for mine, having an automatic as well. I have had trouble getting in touch with Bama for two days though now, and yes i do mean by calling. If you guys get a free chance please PM me or let me know the best time to call (besides normal office hours) cause like Frank said, I want that disgust with my transmission to be relieved!

I had Matt redo my transtune for me about a week ago, and its spot on. No more quick shifts on light to moderate acceleration. It now shifts 1-2nd at about 15 mph, 2-3rd at around 25 and so on. It shifts like I would expect an auto should shift. Plus it seems to always be in the right gear, and is quick to downshift if I need it to. A++++ from me. And I have the TCI streetfighter transmission and 3000 stall converter with 373 gears in my 06....
I would say its quicker than any comparable 5-speed manual car would be.

Update:

As an added bonus, I am somehow managing to get about 1.5 MPG better than with the canned SCT tune I had been using for the last few months.

Incredible!

I absolutely can't wait for my SCT X3 and tunes from Bama Chips.

I ordered on July 27th, so hopefully I'll get them soon.

You just upped my excitement level!!!!

I agree. I've been running the torque tune for over a year now with my JLT II and 3.73s. I have the performance and race tunes as well. A lot of people like the race tune. I've tried all three and the torque tune is my favorite. The shifts are much better than stock. I added the JLT, installed the new tune, and switched to premium gas at the same time. My MPG went up by 2.

If Ford would adopt some of the tuning strategies that Bamachips is using into their OEM tune, I bet the Mustangs would compare even more favorably against the Camaro and Challenger.

The Mustang does so well in stock form, it's a shame the automotive press doesn't have Mustangs with this sort of strategy in place. Certainly the argument could be made that the other cars could gain from aftermarket tunes, but it seems the technology of our cars (variable cam timing and CM plates specifically) lends itself to more of a gain from tuning alone. The Camaro does not feature VCT in their 6.2L V8s.

It appears (at least from my personal results) that they may even be able to post slightly higher fuel economy numbers on the window stickers, which is a selling point for many people.

View media item 8307IMG_1800.jpg Hi I'd like to known What model transmission you put in ? I have the 5R55S and mine shifts hard "sometimes" from 1st - 2nd & 2nd - 3rd but it only happens sometime. I'm thinking it something to do with the servo's or the bands in the transmission. Does anyone known how to fix this or if there is a better transmission for an 07 GT Auto ?

Best way to fix a 3V 5R55S automatic transmission is to swap a manual trans in its place. They are garbage until someone figures out how to make them not suck. Kinda like AOD's were garbage till they got sorted out. And now that the 6R80 is swappable very few people will bother with the 5R

ARE the 6R80 Swappable ? Isn't there aproblem with the ECU and there being a difference between it 6 speed where the 5R is a 5 speed ?

Yes it is totally swapable. There's an entire thread about swapping a 6R into an '05. It's packed with info. Start with that.

There is an enourmous (spelled that wrong I'm sure) amount of tech info here if you try searching for it.

To address the point of the 5R55S and helping it the best options are:
1. upgrade the converter - Circle D recommended
2. Install the 3rd / 4th Servo kit's from TCI
3. Add an aftermarket pan with a dipstick - I recommend Trick Flow's.

My 5R55S lived quite awhile in this form behind my Whipple and was ran hard. Never let me down and I swapped to a 4R70W and sold my trans to another person who put in their Mustang and it is still going strong there.

Tuning it will help as well especially with fill times in the converter settings. And avoid doing the 5 to 3 downshift under WOT as much as you can esp if you have a power adder as that stresses the tranny the most.

Those are top notch suggestions and I think I'll be taking a go at all of them. As for this TCI Servo kits how hard is that to install ? Is it a in the car or out of the car projectt ? Do you have any links or parts number for these recommendations ? Thanks
