I'm sure this has been discussed but I couldn't;t find the answer to my question. I've been using the Optima Red Top batter for the last two years and it just keeps dying. I've exchanged it twice and they keep going dead. I'm sure theres some Vampiric drain somewhere but I hate chasing shit like that down. I finally gave up on charging the battery over and over or on using my booster to get it started. I went to the Ford Dealer and bought the Motorcraft BXT40R battery I hope its the right one my my Mustang and that it last longer than the Optima. Anyone got any options on the rotorcraft BXT40R ?

im pretty sure its the alternator draining the battery, you can do a ripple check to make sure with a multimeter.. but im almost certain thats whats going on here, ,,
you can also do what i did, opted for a rebuild kit,, i just changed the diode from the rebuild kit and 2 years later its still going strong.

as for the battery,, id say the optima was the best bet.. it should last you 5 + yrs ,,
that being said,, until you fix the electric draw ,pulling from the car when off,, it will continue to drain batterys ,

For whatever reason Batteries just don’t last as long as they used to…including the Optima, Die Hard and Interstate.

I buy the Duralast platinum from Auto Zone which is down the street from my house. The return or exchange is simple and painless.

After running many different batteries I now run the duralast golds. Out here batteries never last that long so it doesn't really matter what brand you have but they are good with the exchange and pro rating every time I go in.

My battery seems to be getting weak. Might be my imagination. Anyway, I checked the date yesterday. The thing is 8 years old. Walmart's worst. Can't believe it's still kicking.

Oh thanks I'd much rather rebuild an alternator then chase a Fricken electrical drain

Braille. Endurance series for a street car.
Optima is good, too, but I've had issues with their cases and shapes (but I'm a little unconventional so you can ignore that).

My 2005 had a battery drain problem too. I read online that the factory stereo sometimes drains it even when the car is off!
So the fix was to turn the stereo off before turning the car (ignition) off. That's all.

I do that religiously and I've had no battery problems since! Maybe it'll help you.

It was often the Shaker CD changer that went into cycle mode after turning the ignition off. This would drain the battery. By turning off the Stereo before turning off the car, it prevented that glitch with the CD changer from happening. I haven't seen that glitch on mine and the battery stays rock solid with little to no drain, so maybe only certain Shaker or maybe doesn't affect the Shaker 1000.

Been very happy with the green MTP-96R Interstate batteries so far...had one lemon but the replacement has been really good.

#1 is to turn off the stereo before turning off the key.

A far as batteries, I used to use duralast golds, as they used to last a long time. The last few I've used only lasted maybe 4 years at the most, with failures as little as one year or two, but most right after the 3-year full warranty expires. BS, when you're relying on the battery when you need it.

Instead and all that I use now are Motorcraft batteries; they cost about 75% of the cost of a duralast gold, and of the 3 I've used in the last 5 years in S197's (all to replace duralast golds that did not last nowhere near their advertised life expectancy), they've all performed and held up flawlessly. So, save some money, go with motorcraft!!!
(No, I'm not advertising for motorcraft, but this has been my experience with them, and hence my recommendation, and is what I and other family members use now.)

Motorcraft batteries are made by Johnson Controls (now Clarios) and so are EverStart batteries sold by Walmart. Walmart is currently half the price of Autozone batteries for our Mustangs. I just bought one for $110. What does Motorcraft charge now?
