So ive had my car for sale for awhile but just haven't been promoting it very hard as im still on the edge of doing so. Well anyways today I get a call from a dealership about my car ad that is on Craigslist. They want me to come in tomorrow so they can look at it. This is a very big dealership from what I can tell as they are on the radio constantly. Im new in the selling cars on my own and was just wondering if this was normal. Never have I heard a story where a dealership has contacted someone about their car on Craigslist. Worst thing is I guess is make the 50 mile trip. Anyone else experience this?

Yes. It could mean one of two things...

1. Total marketing scam to get you on their lot. The rest is self explanatory...
2. Legit, have a client in the market that does not have time to search. They think they can do what dealers do to us once we are on their lot (Low trade in, we use auction pricing to balance NADA or Kelly blah blah blah). And then turn it for a profit.

Not that any of that is not appropriate of course...

A buddy of mine had a 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP coupe when they where new and wasn't many on the market yet. His dealership he bought it from called him like 3 months after he bought it, paid like 26-ish and they offered him high 24k to 25k (been so long ago dont exactly remember) and any Pontiac, Buick, GMC at invoice of his choose except the G6 GTP and solstice. He didn't do it. That's my only experience I ever heard of a dealership offering to buy a car back, but that was a new car buy back.

I just got off the phone with a salesman there. Apparently he said its a new division they started a few months ago. He said you come in, they appraise your vehicle and make an offer with no intention of trying to get you in another car. Lmao. Thought more about it, im not going to go waste my time, they would rape me on price due to not having cats and cmdps. I have it listed for 22.5k on Craigslist to weed out the tire kickers. When the dealership called they said over the phone thats what theyd give me and they are serious buyers with cash. Rick hendrick chevrolet is the dealership.

From some other posts ive read it sounds like you work at a dealership...is this a new path dealers are trying to take to make extra mulah? Im not knocking rick hendrick as I hear good things about them and the sales manager was very nice, just couldn't believe the things they were saying

I get letters in the mail every few months offering to give me a stellar price on my 08 GT and they are in high demand! Its just to get you in the door and into a new car.

Maybe since he won the Brickyard yesterday, he is willing to dump some dough somewhere.

As most said, most of the time it is a ploy to get you on the lot. The last dealer I worked at had a similar program, but they based it off of cars that you had bought from that dealer. The computer figured in lease and finance numbers based on past information and estimated information of the vehicle in question, and said if you trade in your car, you could get X amount of dollars, and your payment would be Y per month.

This is another example why I turn off the ringer on my phone and delete 90% of the messages before listening to them. I also throw away 90% of my mail unopened. Nobody is going to call you out of the blue unless they want something from you (usually your money).

What a boring job it must be to search autotrader and Craigslist everyday and bug people. But then again I do it all the time too looking for a possible good deal on a coyote lmao

It is pretty much a form of "cold calling." They find a possible prospect with no prior history to the dealership, and straight up throw a sales pitch (in a round-a-bout way to avoid it being an actual "sales call").

Most dealers do have Internet departments that mainly scour Craigslist, Autotrader, etc., and call up prospects instead of the actual sales rep like in the older days. Whatever channel they can drum up business, they will exercise it.

Without customers/traffic, they can't sell cars, and they can't get money. The service dept. can only provide so much of the revenue. Does every customer buy? Maybe not, but whose to say even that non-buying customer won't go home to their neighbors and friends, and talk about the experience at the dealer (good or bad)?

They do it all the time. Call the salesman and tell him you can't make it but could he drive the 50 miles to your house and appraise your car?

My experience with dealerships that advertise on the radio all the time has never, not even one time been good. Pressure cooker sales routines, lowballs, they have a big bag of tricks.

I like it when they fake cringe and say.. "well, I have to go ask my manager if they can do that". Lol.. BS.. they know from the minute you ask what their bottom dollar is

That "have to go talk to the manager" means he is going for a smoke break and going to try to make you think they are going to bat for YOU.. Lol.. :moon:

I once got a letter in the mail from the local VW dealer saying my 2010 Jetta was in high demand and would offer me top dollar. Right.
