Not sure if this is the right place to put this. I recently bought and installed these as my trim panels were peeling off. I'm pretty impressed with the quality, fit, and texture/color match. I forgot to add, I used Liquid Nails instead of the silicone in the video.
Looks way better than the 2 or 3 attempts I've made at re-using and re-glueing the original fake leather inserts. Are they plastic?
What does this material feel/look like? Is it a hard plastic? Does it look remotely like leather or vinyl?
The company is Coverlay Manufacturing Co and the material is ABS molded plastic. Needless to say, my driver's side vinyl insert is beginning to peel off. Anyhow, what impressed me the most about the Coverlay inserts, is the ABS materials are molded to the contours of the door panels and you can actually hear them snap into place, but Coverlay still recommends applying the included silicone adhesive in order to permanently secure them. Therefore, I'll also be placing an order as well. I also came across some YouTube videos from a company called "PredatorMustangInc.com" that also manufactures replacement door panel inserts that are constructed from carbon fiber, rather than from ABS molded plastic and look to have a much higher quality appearance over the Coverlays, but unfortunately are also twice as expensive lol. At any rate, the Coverlay door inserts are nevertheless still a huge upgrade compared to the "OEM" piece of shit, glued-on vinyl inserts lol. Anyhow, I went ahead and posted the YouTube videos for "predatormustanginc.com" for anyone who may be interested in checking out their carbon fiber door panel inserts.
I'm surprised at the amount of owners that have a continued problem with that panel. I glued my drivers side on 4 years ago. Still looks good as new. Did the drivers side 3 months ago. Didn't come out quite as good as the driver side, but you can only see a few small lumps from the other side of the car if bright sunshine is hitting it. I guess if I had a recurring problem I would go with that new panel.
What type of glue did you use? From what I saw on YouTube, someone used 3M vinyl roof spray adhesive that claims works really well
When they are re-glued it is all about the prep. I have seen the aftermarket panels installed. They look good.
I fixed my drivers side paneling 4 years ago on my 07, used M3 supertrim adhesive spray. Worked wonders. Passenger side is starting to have some bubbles now so going to just do the same thing. Worked great so far!
No reason to feel embarrassed, it's all good A friend of mine took me up to a friend of his today that does upholstery work on his cars. Being that my driver's side seat cover needs some restoration work done, I just might as well have him both prep and re-glue the door panel insert as well I also heard that 3M super trim adhesive spray is pretty good too. Hopefully, the upholstery place that a friend of mine referred me to will be using it to re-glue my door panel insert
If any of you guys are going to do it yourself, I suggest you mask off the entire door that does not need adhesive. Just run some masking tape down into. and along, the depression in the door where the fabric should be tucked into. Then tape newspaper to that tape and cover all the door, and the outside mirror, assuming you're rolling the window down. This stuff is really resilient. If yours is still attached at the bottom, don't pull it off.
If the guy whose going to do the restore work on my driver's side seat cover ends up charging too much for prep and re-gluing the door panel insert? Then, I'll do the re-gluing myself.
It appears that the foam was originally part of the vinyl. On my car, about 95% of the foam is remaining on the door panel. How do you remove the foam and adhesive from the door panel, in preparation for whatever is to be reinstalled?
It's best by far to remove the door panel. Also, the best fix IMO is to find a set of door panels that had no insert from the factory.
Why? Because the panels with factory inserts have sort of a gloss black plastic surface under the inserts. The panels in that video had no inserts from the factory. The backing does not just "simply remove...altogether by using a pair of pliers lol".
