So I realize the only tire made in 305/40/18 is the Nitto NT555R.

Anyone know of a tire with better grip for street use that is as close to this size as possible? Reason being, most tires I've found are smaller and shorter and that would make my rear tire diameter smaller than my front tires, which is goofy

Nitto makes a 315/40-18 NT05R which will work better than the 555R. Mickey Thompson makes a 305/45-18 which might be a little tall.

The best streetable option as far as balance of traction, tire wear and handling is the 555R hands down. And it actualy does great if you get stuck in the rain. I would be nervous running any other drag radial on a daily driver. I even drove them in the snow once, was a little tricky but I managed to get to and from work that day lol. I definetly got my money's worth out of those tires for sure, ran the size you mentioned 305/40/18 and loved them on the street when I daily drove my car.

I run a 555r 305/40/18. It hooks great one the street as long as it isnt cold then its worse than a regular street tire. When its warm tho 1st will still spin but I can hit 2nd as hard as I want and it will barely spin if any at all. Its not bad in the rain around town but I still dont trust them at highway speeds when its wet.

Is it gonna be a daily driver tire or track only?

Daily driver

I hear you guys. I no longer driver in the rain much so the wet traction isn't very important. However, mine will spin through 3rd gear even when it's hot and dry out. My only concern with other tires is the treadlife...

Yeah, I ran the 305/45 18 555Rs for a few years and were great. Then I picked up a little more rwhp and also started smoking through 3rd. Made the mistake of trying NT05s and they are horrible. I'm just going overkill now with 15" wheels in the rear and 325/50 555Rs. Wish I could run M/T or M&H, but can't risk it in a DD 40 miles to work and back.

Mine is a DD but I don't drive in bad weather. The M/T's have held up well and I don't see why I wont get about 5000-6000 miles out of them. That's about all you can expect from a tire this soft but they are worth it because they will actually hook up on the street, in anything but 1st gear. If it's a good section of road, they will even hook in first gear but I only run 600rwhp on a pump gas 93 octane street tune.

Did you get to try the NT05R? Those are the ones I'm eyeing for now...

Thanks! 5000-6000 miles is a bit too low for me :(

only DR you'll get much more than that out of is a NT555r

I got 5000 ish out of two sets of MT ET SRIIs

I have M&H now, maybe 4000 or so, have to check the tread on them.

Nice thing is the 555r 325/50 is $65 cheaper than the 305/45 ($203 vs. $267). More tire for less money, gotta love it. Damn, I just noticed the 305/40 is $294. Thinking the investment on new wheels will be worth it.

what size wheel you running? My street setup is now a forgestar 18x10.5. Unfortunately I think I am limited to about a 305/40/18. MT makes them in that size, nt05R makes a 305/45/18 (kinda tall)

Would prefer to try out the M&H but they only make a damn 325/40/18 or go all the way down to a freggin 275 in the M&H. WTF? The 325 is too wide for the wheels per their spec. Think they recommend a 12" wide wheel for those semi-steam-rollers

Stupid wheels....

I run them on a 10" wheel. They are fine, spoke to M&H prior to purchase and they said many do use a 10" wheel.
