I just bought a stock oil pan from another member to replace mine, which got damaged with the motor, and the sensor in the pan is different than mine. He said his came from an 07, mine is an 06. Was there a change in the sensor? My sensor will not fit in the place of his sensor, and the plug is not the same.

Pics comparing the two:

that sensor is not oil level, rather it is oil temp for the PCM.

When I recently purchased a new oil temp sensor for my 05 (installing a Canton oil pan which has 1/2" NPT), I had to supply the dealer not only the VIN#, but also the engine code which is on the tag on the valve cover. The parts counter man could have looked that up too, but I guess that was too much effort.

Obviously you now can see why. The sensor you have in the damaged pan has a 3/8" NPT (3F1Z-12A648-A / DY-1144). The sensor in the other pan is a straight metric thread and seals with an O-ring. Sorry I don't have the part # on this one.

I would suggest spending a few minutes with your local dealer's parts counter man and confirm that both type of sensors were used with your year's PCM, which I believe to be the case. Then, if they are both compatible with your PCM, order a replacement pigtail harness for your engine harness that matches your oil temp sensor.

2007 do not have a sensor in the pan....anywhere. mine was built in april 2007, no oil temp sensor in the pan. so i highly doubt that pan is from a 2007.

No sensor in the pan on my 07 either. Thats actually the first I have seen of the sensor in the pan.

In my 05 do I have to have that sensor? I bought a new pan because my mine was offloaded or something. There is no hole for a sensor.

No you don't, but you'll get a check engine light if you don't do something about it. If you have a custom tune, the oil temp can be turned off. You can also 'bypass' the circuit with a small resistor (somewhere in the 80-100 ohm range if I remember correctly). But turning it off in the tune is best if you can't put the sensor in the pan.

So I have a 05 GT and the motor had blew. I got another engine from a 06 GT and the sensor on the 06 has a bigger hole in the oil pan. I left that sensor there and took the original one from my old engine and plugged it in and zip tied the plug so the check engine light isn’t on. I’m going to the hardware store soon so I can get an adapter if I find one. I’ll keep everyone posted.

If this is an oil temp sensor and there is no gauge, it is used for some calculation. I would expect some side effects if turned off in the tune or physically.

It does something in the cal letting it know the engine is not up to temp yet. I have an 06, changed pans and left the sensor off. The motor never ran full power. I then mounted the sensor on the outside of the pan with the sensor part touching the pan and all is well. I've had 2 tuners and neither knew how to disable this. I don't think that it is a temp curve. I think its an on off switch, yes the engine is warm enough or no its still cold.

Not that anyone cares any more. The car is 19 years old and this thread is 13 years old. Plus I'm sure someone, somewhere on this forum has covered this in more detail. Everything there ever was to know about s197s is in here somewhere.
