over revved even with oem tune?

just finished doing an oil change so i went out for a drive and decided to give it the beans but shifting to 3rd it locked me out. assuming i was in 3rd i full throttled and the revs went over the redline. which is unusual because ive spanked the rev limiter before but it seemingly bypassed it just now. Should i be worried?

edit: car is 2006 mustang gt

Only worry if you have a new engine noise. Probably not going to happen.

I missed the 3rd gear downshift and went to 1st at full throttle. Rear locked up, car went sideways, tach went way in the red. Everything was fine. I was on the way to the drag strip. Hammered on the car all night. No problem.

From the description and assuming its a manual, it sounds like you found 1st instead of 3rd?

The OEM rev limiter is 6250rpm which already ends up in the red zone on the tachometer, but Ford went to 6500rpm on the Bullit in 2008 with no meaningful modifications to the engine. The aftermarket tuners say 7000rpm is safe without floating valves on the 4.6L.
I routinely rev to 6500rpm on the track without issue.

Unless you really dumped the clutch and it zoomed past 7k, I feel you should be fine. Agreed you would have noticed if so by now.

That's known in the trade as a "money shift" for obvious reasons. ;) Luckily it seems both you and the OP dodged a bullet, and that's probably because the engine only over-revved very briefly.

The harmonic balancer was the only change made on the 08 Bullitt and 10 GT engines that allowed the rev limit to be raised to 6500rpm.
The stock valve springs in all 3V engines were rated to 6800rpm, and these engines have indeed been known to hit 7000rpm without floating the valves, but nevertheless I'd stick to a 6500rpm limit to reduce the risk of cam phaser failure.

If you haven't frenched the redline you haven't driven it. That said, long as you stopped and aren't having issues, you're probably fine. Write a note for your next oil change to have a seance with the fluid to check for sparklies.
