Powder coating Eibach springs

Does anyone have any experience powder coating over existing powder coating especially on coil springs? I have some red eibachs but ford blue on EVERYTHING else. Wondering about dropping them off at a Coaters for some FRPP blue. Any issues?

The coaters that i have used, usually have the parts chem stripped. They don't bother trying to blast original coating off, it's too hard to remove.

Sometimes, you have to coat over existing coating, for example, red needs to have a black basecoat. Usually that isn't a problem. However, some colors are just problematic, especially when you start adding prism etc. Those "special" colors chip super easily.

I forgot to ask, are you doing your own powder coat? If so, you might try just one, to see if it comes out to your liking.

If you are having a shop do it, then they should know what would work, and give a recommendation.

The only other thing that I can think of, you need to be aware of coating thickness. This probably wouldn't be a problem on your springs, but can be a real drama when parts need to fit with tight tolerances. The actual thickness of the powder can end up being .030-.050 thick. The coatings also tend to build up more around the edges.

I should have stated more clearly in my previous post, I know that they don't strip every part they coat. They regularly coat black over the factory white powder coat. It isn't usually a problem.

Im having a shop do it. Going from red to blue so not a weird color. Should be fine

I would not strip eibachs coating. Its really good. If it were me, i'd just hit it with a rattle can and call it good enough.

Not planning to strip just coat ontop of coating. Hoping it sticks

Haha, my shit looks like a kaleidoscope. Red, Hammertone, Polished Metal, Blue and Yellow.

We tried (and paid) to powder coat over powder coat on parts from my nephew's Jeep. the powder coat guys suggested against it. Did it anyway. Did not look good or hold up well. Wound up roughing up other powder coated surfaces with sandpaper and using a rattle can. Looks and has held up much better.

I wish that more vendors would sell their stuff in black as an option. I have to go through inspection every two years and these colorful parts are screaming "look at me". I appreciate that J&M have black parts too.
