Is the best place to get a rpm signal off the neg on a coil pack? e2boost controller has a “rpm signal” wire to hook up. Found a lot of info on 07+ cars but not much for 05-06 cars for rpm reading. Prefer to get a wire under dash area if possible
I have an 06. To find a tach signal for one of my gauges I had to thread a wire thru the firewall (there are usually grommets on the firewall (driver's side) with room to add a wire) and connect it to a neg (red wire) on one of the COPs. I used a mechanical splice on #7 COP though I would prefer something more substantial. The only reason I have it is for logging/tuning. Not sure about any wires you could pick under the dash. Mine works fine.
If I remember from when I rewired my engine the the grounds for the COPs come together and are shared as one or one ground for each side. So if you tap the ground too far down the line you will get signals from more than one COP.
Correct, here's the print: https://iihs.net/fsm/?d=40&f=Electronic Engine Controls - 4.6L.pdf In my case I tapped it about 4 in from the connector. If I remember correctly I had to select 2 pulses per revolution in the software (for tuning) to read correctly.
Awesome, thanks for the info!! I read a few articles about going to the coil pack. Some say you have to hit a certain coil & a couple places said you have to hit the ground BEFORE it branches out to the coil packs!?! One guy said he tapped off the injector bcz the coil packs generate so much “noise” on the wire. I do building controls so I understand what they’re saying about the noise. I’ll tap #7 and hopefully get the results you got.
What you mentioned about the injector got me thinking so I took another look and found the connection is actually to #7 injector (white wire, red stripe). My sincere apologies to all.
no worries, thanks for the pic! Got plenty of time & space to get a wire thru. Gonna holesaw a 1/2 hole hopefully by the harness at the top for fuel & oil pressure wiring harness
It would be easier/faster to sneak a wire thru the patch that is just to the right of the brake booster or if you take the plastic fender liner off of the drivers side wheel well there are at least 2 or 3 grommets you can fish a wire thru without creating any issues. I've run several thru both for gauges/tubes and what not.
My fuel & oil pressure gauges have this connector I have to pass thru the firewall. Have those connectors, vacuum line, rpm wire, line lock wire…think that’s it to pass thru on drivers side
What did you end up doing? I just saw this post. No idea why. I ran all of mine thru an existing hole/grommet close to the brake booster. I had enough room for the tubing to my mechanical fuel pressure gauge, Eb2, and wide band. I may have enlarged the hole and put a new grommet in.
I took out the ac accumulator and holesaw’d a 7/8 hole for a grommet. I was at the mercy of the length of the fuel/oil pressure gauge wiring harness. Crappy pic but…
