S550- 6 piston Brembos on 05-14 GT Guide (affordable)

At least it clears the front…I thought 19’s would clear the 6 pots on the outside of the caliper. Here’s mine with 20’s although I had to use a 3mm spacer (2mm of clearance).

 

What calipers are those? The wheel style may play into it as well. Just because the wheel is 19” diameter doesn’t mean all wheels have the same ID does it?

 

Correct; wheel dimensions vary based on design/size/width/offset; etc... You're also correct that wheel spacers are not the answer in your case; you need larger wheels (20's) to clear those calipers. You might want to look up the stock wheels those calipers were paired with and use that as a yard stick but I'd recommend visiting a competent wheel/tire shop and get measurements for fitment options to be sure. Best if you can find a set of wheels with the proper clearances and offsets so everything clears without the use of adapters or band-aids of any kind.... Good luck.

 

Will these clear 19x9.5 shelby cs5 wheels? I assume they will. Quite a bit heavier than stock? I want to do these or shelby 4 piston

 

The stock calipers in most cases will clear just about any size wheel (18 - 20) made for the 05 - 14 Mustang. The issue becomes when you try to use either the Brembo 4 pot (GT500) or later Mustang calipers/disks. You need to know what the offset and backspacing numbers are to be certain they'll clear without interference (and caliper to inner wheel barrel clearance for later models). In most cases a 19" wheel can be used with the 4 pot Brembo. A 19 x 9.5 may be able to be used without spacers but that depends on the offset. This is where you want to ask other members what their experiences are or discuss with a reputable wheel/tire shop what will work for your application. The company selling the wheels should also be able to advise what will clear but again dependent on what calipers you plan to use. You can take some measurements and they should be able to tell you whether the wheels you'd like to use will work or not.

Sorry, i meant will the 6 piston s550 calipers clear the shelby cs5 19x9.5 wheels, I know they clear the stock brakes since i all ready have the wheels, I'm kinda stuck with them. they have a +34mm offset and 6.543" backspacing. On Shelbys website this is what they say. "DUE TO THE MANY BRAKE PACKAGES AND CONFIGURATIONS, THESE WHEELS MAY NOT CLEAR THE CALIPERS IF YOU HAVE AN EXTREME AFTERMARKET/PERFORMANCE BRAKE SYSTEM AND/OR MAY REQUIRE WHEEL SPACER." They also don't answer emails. What company doesn't answer emails? I'll probably just do the 4 piston to be safe and they are half as much for the reman ones.

 

Well, for comparison's sake the link shows that the stock OEM 9 x 19" wheel also has a 42mm offset (and does clear the 4 pot Brembo's without spacers; it's what I currently have on my car) so it's very likely that the 9.5" CS5 w/42mm offset will also clear the 4 pot Brembo's and/or possibly require only a small spacer to fit the 6 pot. Regarding wheel diameter... from other's experiences all I've heard is you need 20" wheels to clear the later model 6 pot calipers.

I use the 4 pot Brembo's. Best brake upgrade I've ever done and only cost me about $125/side incl exchange fees. Got them from O'Reilly's.

Again, If I were you I would contact a reputable wheel/tire shop and ask them what would work in your situation. Someone like Forgeline should be able to answer your questions.

If you’re going 6 piston, to be safe, I’d use a 20” wheel like DieHarder mentioned above. My 19x8.5” AMR wheels had more than enough depth to clear the caliper, but the ID of the wheel hit on the edges of the caliper. The 6 piston brakes are massive.

 

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to do the write up. I used your list to gather my parts, but unfortunately in my situation the calipers didn’t clear. I expect there to be some issues when doing modifications so I worked around it. I think it’s a great write up and will help many people who don’t have thousands of dollars to do brakes. If I had my AMR wheels in a 20”, this would be a cake walk. I didn’t mean anything bad by posting my specific situation. I just figured it may help someone in the future who may have my wheel setup. Thanks for doing the write up in the first place.

 

There are 18's out there that will fit. Expect to drop $$$$. I have the big 6 pot Shelby Wilwood brakes. My forgerstar 17's actually clear! Not so much about size as it is manufacturing. Forged wheels are more likely to fit as well.

I was going to say this. the shelby rims I have aren't forged, but they are light weight at 24lbs and flow formed. Cheaper cast wheels are going to be thicker on the inside diameter and heavier so they are strong enough to not break on every pot hole.

 

Admittedly, the AMR wheels I have are cheaper than all of those and probably why I had my issue with fitment. I think the “style” may play into it some as well. Not 100% sure. But I am very happy to know the forgestars fit because that’s on my list in the future!

 

I have Apex EC7 19x10's on a 2009 GT and there is plenty of clearance with 6p S550 Brembos in front.

 

This is mine I did about 2.5 years ago....
These are my street 20" wheels up front. However, I test fitted my Forgestar F14 skinny wheels and they cleared my brakes perfectly. I have the 6-pot S550 calipers btw.
