Two options you rarely see, are they dealer installed.

On a recent pickup of a 2005 Screaming Yellow convertible I noticed two options that I’ve seen from time to time but they are never listed in any dealer brochures. First is the thin double pin strip that runs the length of the car from the top of the fender to the top of the rear quarter. The second is the color matched door protector strip in the middle of the door. The door bumper would be an easy dealer install but I can’t see them adding pinstriping with the accuracy that is needed in dealer setting. There was another yellow convertible in a yard with the same door strip. I’ve seen the door bumper on different Mustangs in three of four colors, but it’s a rare sighting.

The pinstriping is not factory installed. The molding I think was only "factory" installed on rental cars, not on consumer sales.

Message me the VIN and I can check to see if it was ever a rental car

The door guards were a factory option for anyone who wanted them, at least for '05. I attended a release party one of my local dealers held when the S197 came out. I remember seeing a few of the cars there had them as well as commenting on their... ahem... utilitarian appearance.

I didn't recall them as a factory option. I only remember seeing them on rental cars. Interesting that they were an option on '05

The door bumpers look bad, probably one reason you don’t see them much.

Maybe this will help -- a website with a downloadable PDF of the 2005 Mustang Order Guide:

According to the order guide, "Bodyside Moldings" were "Fleet Only" options. So that would include rental cars and other corporate fleet purchases -- or any fleet purchase with a valid "FIN" code.

The vin # is 1ZVFT84N655216190 although I would be surprised to see it’s a rental with leather, shaker 500 and interior upgrade package. Thanks for the info BullittSS, that is one treasure trove of information and I do see the fleet option on the bottom of the page #961 body molding. What is a fin #?

"A FIN code grants you access to the Ford Fleet website, which gives you exclusive benefits that help you manage your fleet."

Interesting. This was either different in Canada or the dealer had managed to commandeer some rental fleet bound Mustangs for that event. The mouldings were listed on the Monroney labels like any other option but I wasn't checking for fleet codes, assuming the cars there were just inventory.

Correction on the ‘05 that I had, it was a Premium but did not have the interior upgrade package so it did probably start out as a rental car. I picked up a 2011 V6 that was pretty much a “plain Jane” and when I went through the owners manual sleeve I found some papers that indicated it was originally a rental unit. The only odd thing was that it had a factory strut brace but I suppose someone could have added that at some point. I will say the power of the 3.7L is quite an improvement over the old 4.0L.
