I normally leave hawks alone, but I have a Red-shouldered Hawk that is a harassing my Indian Hens (Pileated Woodpecker) trying to get the juvenile birds. If I get a clean shot he’s gone, because Indian Hens are much more rare than hawks!

I would caution against killing a bird of prey (raptor) since they are protected by federal and state laws.
It is a felony and in most states carries at least 1 year imprisonment and fines up to $10K.

I understand, I have never killed a hawk and it was a (mostly) rhetorical statement. But if I see it again in the tree trying to get a baby Indian Hen (only held at bay by the adult who was as big as the hawk) there may be an inaccurate “warning” shot!
As stated, the Pileated Woodpecker is much more endangered than the hawk. In fact, I had not seen an Indian Hen for several years before I bought this place…the hawks are everywhere.
