Are all 4R70W transmissions the same? Meaning, if I have one that came out of a 2WD truck with a 4.6L can I rebuild it and expect to use it in a S197?

There are two different first gear ratios. Truck has a lower ratio than the car 4r70. Otherwise identical from my research

I thought the truck ones were slightly longer

I think you are right. When I was putting one together, my trans guy mentioned the housing he found needed the end machined off.

There are different-length (and output shaft diameter) tailshaft housings. I suppose that translates into different length output shafts.

All 4R70W and 4R75E have same gear ratios. The F150 4R70w and the Mustang 4R70W are the same length. Its the Lincoln and some big body cars that used the longer tailshaft.
I have built and swapped several between Mustang and F150. I currently have a 2003 Mach1 4R75E in my 2001 F150 Supercrew.
The diameter is same on all 4R70W and 4R75W 2wd applications the difference is AOD used a smaller hole/bushing in rear tailhousing.
The best trans to build off of is a 5.4L F150 from 2003.
5.4L applications have better pump pressure boost valve and some beter components and in 2003 they did a J-mod in the transmissions.

You are correct. The 4r70w are all the same. The AOD has the higher first gear. The W in 4r70w means "wide' hence the 2.84 first gear.

We built it ourselves parts were about $1,000 plus cost of a converter of course.

Thanks man. cause I have got a th400 swap priced and a 4r70w swap price and the th400 is cheaper but 2,000$ so Im just on the fence about what to do really. And not sure where to get the 4r built to hold 900 and be reliable/
