Confused about cam timing 2 dark links vs 3 dark links

I have been searching and I see the 3v chains often have 3 dark colored links. The 2v engines have 2 dark colored links. My 3v has chains with 2 dark links. I know the crank mark at 6 o'clock. From searching I see on the 3v the cam gear mark sits between the remaining 2 dark colored links. However, since I only have 2 dark links total, should the cam gear mark sit in the center of the dark link or off to one side?

The two dark links are on opposite ends of the chain. Place one link on the mark on the crank and the other link on the mark on the cam phaser.
