Engine Damage ??

Wife was racing down the track and the car shut down. Stopped the car and re-started only to hear the wonderful sound of metal on metal coming from the passenger side. Sounds like it starts low and while idling it's at the top of the valve cover. Code P0345 Camshaft Position Sensor A Bank 2 is showing. I cleared it, started the car again and the code came back along with the metal clanking.

There are no holes or leaks of anything and the oil via the dipstick looks clean.

Intermittently for the last few weeks the PCM has been showing low oil pressure, but no codes and the message goes away in a second or two. Car's been running fine.

No shift was missed during the run, although I did hear the rev limiter being hit while she shifted from 2nd to 3rd on a previous run. Put the car on a flatbed and had it taken to a shop. Won't be able to get into it until next week. :thud:

Sooo...if the motor has to be re-built, my first challenge is there's no one here that can do it. So I may be stuck buying a long block and doing a straight swap. I'll update once we get open it up.

Oh man... Sorry to hear that... Thats why I bought a long block as well... I didn't wanna deal with the hassle of building it here... Plus I didn't want the downtime...

I would pull the valve cover and see if one of the followers popped out like Ron's did. It may be a relatively easy fix.

Maybe your oil pump failed? Instead of a lonblock, you could just buy a shortblock if your heads weren't damaged.

Spoke to the owner of the shop yesterday, both he and the head mechanic are Americans and Mustang enthusiasts which is why I took it there. He told me he has no problem rebuilding these motors, so that's a plus. If we have to pull the motor, he offered for me to pull off everything I can, i.e., blower, to reduce the labor cost. He also offered to let me help with the rebuild so I can learn and watch every step of the build.

More to come once we pull the valve cover off and see what's going on.

Yeah, no shit, along with this shop being able to rebuild, that takes the long block option out. My wife's kicking herself in the ass but I keep telling her it's not her fault and that no window in the block is a good thing.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Two passes I made prior to her jumping in and the motor going south were at 117mph (best), so with a good 60' I probably would have dipped into the 11s this weekend. LOL...just out of reach.

Oh hell yeah. Although she's very cool about modding and obviously getting into racing, she probably may have given me a bit of crap for the $$$ I'm about to drop into this. I even made the comment to her and she gave me that woman look that says I'm right but won't admit it. :idea:

So another plus side is I can do whatever the heck I want and she's going to go right along with it. :clap:

just threw2 one of these,

P0345 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit

stock 08 bullitt, (except for the brakes),
NOTHING done to engine,
19,800 miles.

last night, i started noting a slight miss, or lurch, or lope in the idle,
intermittent
someties felt like a gentle buck, in the power, cruising at 65, in 5th on the interstate.

no noises,
oil pressure looks fine

oil was just changed a few weeks ago, and was able to track the car for three days at vir right after that oil change, driven hard, and no problems till yesterady.

so the ?'s are:
what is it, considering it is a pristine, untouched 4.6?
can i drive it (easy, around town) this weekend?
can i drive it to the dealership? (i.e. at all)

When your idiot light flashes....that's means something really important is wrong in the car, and you shouldn't drive it. When it just comes on, it means it has seen an error or miss-step 3 times, and is giving you a heads up. I would have no issue driving it to the dealership to get looked at if that is the case.

Probably alternator. Start the car, turn on the lights, radio, roll down windows. Now, roll up the windows, if the lights dim or you notice a miss while doing this, your alternator is on its last days.
