Air Intake's and Diablo Tune Results

We were able to do some back to back testing on a basically stock 2011. The car had roughly 5800 miles on it. 6speed manual with Magnaflow Muffler System.

Tests were all done equal same day. All 5th gear pulls with limiters raised and engine at full operating temp.

Quick Run down of the dyno sheet.

Green : Exhaust only nothing else : 380hp
Black : Exhaust & JPC/Diablo 93 octane tune : 401hp +21rwhp
Blue : Exhaust , JPC/Diablo 93 octane tune & Steeda Intake : 411hp + 31rwhp
Red : Exhaust , JPC/Diablo 93 octane tune & JLT Carbon Fiber Intake : 422.9hp + 42.9rwhp

gains over the entire rpm range are real impressive

I agree. I'm impress with the hp and tq throughout. It's hard for me not to buy one of these cars but even harder to keep it out of my fox body that I could get to be around 2500lbs with engine.

so basically JLT get better HP than the Steeda like many of us was expecting?

Nice!!!! What exhaust did that car had??? Headers or cat back? I assume you are talking about headers...

Wow..I've got to save some funds for the JLT intake now. Exhaust is going to take some time

Nice!!!! What exhaust did that car had??? Headers or cat back? I assume you are talking about headers...

"Magnaflow Muffler System"

the car had an axle back and thats it.

And I had people jumping on me when I said the Steeda looked poorly designed, and the JLT design was better...

In what way? The Steeda design is damn solid. Velocity stack, reuse of cold air inlet and a good heat shield.

You are going to have to cite specifics on why it is so terrible....

I didn't say it was TERRIBLE, just that compared to the JLT, it looked poorly designed.

My reasons: 1) It looks like it was pieced together out of spare parts in someone's garage. The fact that there are multiple transition pieces between the filter and the throttle body means there will be disruption of airflow. Is it significant? Probably not, but every little bit helps, right? Not only that, but the Steeda steps down from the filter (even with the velocity stack) to the constant diameter piping rather abruptly. That will disrupt airflow. It's hard to tell from the limited pictures, but the velocity stack looks like the transition isn't nearly as gradual as it should be to be truly effective. The JLT appears to have a smooth taper in the single piece piping from the filter to the throttle body. 2) With the Steeda, the cold air inlet isn't exactly being utilized as it is with the stock Ford intake. The Ford intake sucks air from the cold air inlet, whereas the Steeda simply has a hole in the heat shield at the Ford cold air inlet. The filter isn't connected(like the Ford airbox is), so it's creating comparatively little pressure differential to pull the air up through the hole. Unless the cold air inlet is having air forced into it from the other end (which I don't believe it is) it will provide little benefit. 3) stainless steel has a much higher thermal conductivity than plastic. When cooking using otherwise identical pots, which handle would get hotter, a bare metal one, or a plastic covered one?

Look at the pictures below, they're essentially the same thing, right? Heat shield, filter, pipe to the throttle body. The reasons I stated above contribute to the additional 12 RWHP the JLT makes over the Steeda. I'm sure there are other reasons that contribute that I am missing as well.

*DISCLAIMER: I'm not an airflow/aerodynamics expert. I'm basing the above on my experience with fluid flow.

There may be more to the tests than what has been published. Don't believe everything you hear/read. Now that is not a jab at any vendor but it has been done in the past to skew results.

Secondly, both CAI's seem to be pretty good. If the conditions were not drastically altered, then I think the gains over the Steeda can be attributed to the intake tube design. I don't think the metal piece on the Steeda with heatsoak is an issue. The air is moving too fast through the intake for it to become drastically altered. I would bet that IAT's between the intakes are almost identical.

Fluid dynamics and aerodynamics share many properties.

Last, I have witnessed a 2011 GT run 11.44 with a stock airbox and filter. I would be interested to see the same car on the same track, same day switch to the JLT and see if there is any difference. I prefer track results over dyno results.

Dyno tests prove the power is there, track testing has too many variables like coolant temps, track temps, oil temps, wind direction, tire spin, launch rpm, shift rpm, tire temp and weight of the vehicle.
ALL MUST BE EQUAL for a perfect test.

On the dyno coolant, oil and outside temps need to be the same and that's easy.

When our kit first came out someone came in my thread boasting about their special Velocity stack, but what people do not know is the only reason other manufactures use this tapered addition to their kit is because S&B, our filter manufacture, patented the tapered flange design into their filters.
All JLT filters are S&B filters and all of the ones in our kits have a built in tapered flange (or velocity stack) built right into the filter.
This leaves a nice smooth interior air path without big ID changes from large to small.

Also what's unique to the JLT’s 1 piece design tube is the smooth gradual transition from 4.5" to 3.5" at the throttle body. This transition can ramp up air speed and cause no turbulence.

We also refuse to use any or as little as possible metal parts in our kits due to heat transfer.

Let's not over look the killer tuning done by JPC here. Not many are using Diablosport and here we have JPC using it and having awesome results. 21 RWHP from JUST a tune? Not many can say that:highfive:

I agree Track testing has way to many things to consider. Same day Same Dyno same car results are pretty good. After that its what each car does with the horspower that wins or loses races.

The JLT intake is a very nice design. Now I just need to buy a 5.0 to put it on.
