Last night I went to the track to test out my new mods, but I ran into an issue. It done something that I have never read about or seen happen to the MT82 6 speed. I have not had any issues with my tranny and it has 2200 miles on the car. But last night when shifting from first to second, it jammed or something going into second. Basically it went into second but made a load clunk, and just freewheeled like it was in neutral. So I let off the gas and proceeded to try and shift it into third and coast the rest of the way through the 1/4. I coasted onto the return road and looked under neath the car but didn't see anything unusual. I rowed through all the gears with the clutch in and everything seemed fine, so I went ahead and tried to take off in first. Strange part is.... I had all my gears and it shifted just like normal, but it has a whine to it now in 1-3rd. 4-6 sound just fine. I have no issues with getting it into gear at all.

Is there any way that I could have went past the throw of 2nd gear or the shifter failed and didn't engage 2nd at all? The shifter was in the correct position for being in 2nd gear, but there was nothing there, like it was in neutral. If so, do the after market shifters for these cars come with a stop like the old Pro 5.0 did for the T5's?

I had no issues driving the car 65 miles home last night after the races other than the whine now that is in 1-3. Tranny still shifts like glass. Kinda got me stumped here fellas. Any Ideas or guesses are more than welcome.

Sounds like the pressure plate stuck to me. Has happened to a lot of people. The trans whine is also happening to lots.

If the pressure plate stuck I would not have had a clutch pedal and the pedal felt just fine. There was no whining in the trans till after this happened last night.

Perhaps you bent shift a shift fork? That can cause a whine

That is kinda what I was thinking as well. Seems like it would have to take an awful lot of force to do that but anything is possible. That is also why I was asking if the after market shifters for these cars had a hard stop on them to prevent something like that.

Tremac displayed a prototype drop in replacement for the MT82 at the Carlisle Ford Nationals a couple weeks ago. It featured a direct shift setup and is rated to about 700 ft/lbs of torque if I recall. I forget the model it's based on, but they said it would be ready about August at a cost of about $3,500.

For high power setups it will be nice to have a beefier alternative to the MT82. I've got a few track days since I added the ProCharger and so far no transmission issues, but I try to take it easy on the tranny.

Sounds clutch related vs. trans related.

Why not just pick up a GT500 Tranny? Wont those work with the 11's as well but just a different flywheel is needed?

I am going to be doing a 5.0 swap next summer and I have researched and found that I could use my tranny as long as I have a couple of things to make it work properly.

Similar thing happened to me after my first trip to the track. Only I wasn't having it act like it was in neutral when it was in 2nd, it just really didn't want to go into 2nd after my first couple runs. Made me miss 2nd on 3 consecutive runs and then it just started working again. Been fine ever since, but ever since then, I too have the whine in 1-3. Went back to the track a few weeks later and didn't have any problems with 2nd gear and everything seems fine other than the whine, which seems to be pretty common.

i dont think the bell housing is the same. you would need an adapter for that. along with different clutch/flywheel components.

Its not that hard to do. I bent the shift fork in my buddys 11 sec 2002 Trans Am. The stock hurst shifter that came in those cars didnt have a stop on them like we assumed they did. Lucky the thing had alot of torque, because we had something like 2nd and 5th gear only going home from the track. LOL

I hope its not to complicated because I dont have enough money in my budget to add a new tranny especially not these new shitty trannys, I guess I will find out next summer.

Bell housing is the same, problem is the speedo sending unit , the 11's use a totally diff unit.

I've done some really hard shifts from first to second without this coming up. I've had it where I've tried to shift too hard/fast and it feel like second is locked out, no grinding at all. That, I'm sure, was due to the syncros. I think the synchronizers in the MT82 suck.

However, ever since I added a half quart of Lucas Synthetic oil to my transmission, I've not had this happen again. And I've dogged the living shit out of this new trans. My first one was replaced due to an accident. I had the same issue with that one. But no whining from either.

Did you add the Lucas Tranny Fix or what?

I've added the Tranny Fix to a lot of 3650s that weren't shifting well. Seems the Lucas helps the syncs function much better.
