Well I had a pair of slicks on some aluminum wheels for my Lightning and right now the fronts are powder-coated black so when I ran the slicks it looked like crap having the different finish from front to back on the wheels. I think in the future I am going to get a set of front wheels for the track to match but for now I wanted the rears black. I also wanted to be able to switch back later and everything I have read says you can peel off the plasti-dip when you want to. So here is what I did:

First I had to track the stuff down. Our local "do it best" hardware store had it but only stocked red. I had them order me a can of black.

Next I cleaned the wheels

Then I taped off the tires

After that I sprayed on my first coat. This stuff is weard!! It will come out splotchy but after it sits the beads flatten into eachother like powdercoating and it leaves a smooth finish

Even tho it looks like you need to spray more to fill in the "fish eye" looking spots give it some time and most will settle and work them selves out. It will have a hammered look like this until it drys

The first wheel I did I used too much thinking I needed more to fill where the fish eye spots were. It ended up running on me but crazy enuf the runs almost disappeared as it dried.

In the end you'll have a non-permanent black coated wheel.

I love this stuff. I painted my stock rims with it. It's still on after almost a year and MANY touch less car washes. It hasn't even begun to peel off yet!

Thats cool. I am going to buy some for my racestars. I was just talking to my brother the other day about it and wondering how it was to spray. So now I know what to expect. Thanks

Nice write up. Might have to try this, its nice you can peel it off without messing up the finish under it.

You don't have to tape the tire off. The plastidip will come right off afterwards.

Looks good, the thing about plasti-dip is that it shrinks as it dries that's why it irons out it's own finish and squeezes up all nice and smooth.

Am I the only one who liked the wheels before painted? Looks good though!

I did too but my fronts are black and I wanted the rears to go with the rest of the truck when I'm running the slicks. I wanted to do this so I can go back to the polished finish later when I get some racestar fronts for the track.

Okay smart move. Its gonna look good with polished front and back imo.

I used a can and a half but my spokes are pretty small...I would make sure you have at least 2 can's.

I used this on my saleen rims. Turned out really nice. I believe I used 2 - 2 1/2 cans. Only sprayed the front of the wheels. May look into doing it again.
