This thread is exactly the reason why I don't go to Shell for gas, I have heard so many bad gas stories from them. BP 93 is the best gas you can get and that's all I fill up will. As for your plugs, I agree with what was said earlier about our 3v engines and octane boosters, they typically don't get along.

If you believe in the Top Tier rating system, this is a good reference point.

edit: Just saw that Shell is on their list. I guess you can cross that out..lol

I noticed that 7-11 isn't on the list and they just bought out all the local Mobil stations. Recently I've noticed that my car isn't running as well as it used to, but after running a bit of race gas last Friday all of a sudden my car is running great again. Looks like I need to find a different gas station, the nearest BP is about 5 miles away.

Well more to the mystery. After 50 mile+ trip car was fine and I babied it. Today coming home I gave it a quick throttle hit and noticed a stumble, then I got to a light and the stuble was worse just from driving normal. I drove easy the rest of the way. I still have 1/2 tank of that shell gas and I JUST filled up half with BP. I checked the plug again and it was fine. I also checked a plug next to it and it was ok too.

I'm hinting towards coil or gas now.

After talking with Chris at Injectors RX, I'm going to send injectors and fuel rail to him for testing and cleaning.http://www.injectorrx.com/index.html somethings we talked about make perfect sense. I talked to 6 tuners today for our cars and they are stumped.Time for the clean out I just filled up half a tank 93 oct from a good source but I'm going to end up draining it and starting all over.If my injector is clogged by contaminants I will send Shell the bill.

What state are you in? Is shell really that bad? I've had no problems so far, but if it will hurt my baby then I will go nowhere near it in the future. I always thought of them as a good brand.

I'm in Florida.

Yes it is that bad when I changed my fuel filter I tipped it to the side where the gas tank was feeding in and there was a orange color gas coming out. The car has 60k miles and always in FL. It shouldn't be rust from my tank. Also the way our fuel rail intake is set up it shoots the gas right at the cylinder I'm having issues with possible clogged injector from debris etc.

I was going to suggest a coil on plug to try. Also I had a similar issue and it ended up being an injector.

It didn't burn the plug up but it was popping and hesitating pretty much the same symptoms you described. I first went through and checked for exhaust leaks but everything was tight so I was scratching my head until mine finally threw a cel which pointed to misfire number 1. I changed my plugs(my original plugs.) and the light went away but the popping and stutter kept happening. I pulled the plugs again and one of them was gassed up so I bought one COP from ford and swapped it from each plug trying to alleviate the pops. I pretty much went through a process of elimination until I got to the Injectors. I had one that wasn't functioning right causing the car to foul out that plug. It was pouring too much gas into the cylinder. Yours may be pulling a cylinder lean causing it to burn the plug.

I didn't have that extreme so I'm not really positive on the cause just telling you what I found to be my problem hope it helps out some.

Bad gas is usually due to crud in the holding tanks at the retail location. Old stations with old tanks will be more likely to have crud or water intrusion. High volume stations will usually be a safer bet. Shell may not necessarily be a bad brand, but here in Florida I haven't had much luck with them.

Quick question...why are some of the plug threads covered in $h!t? Is there any water or other contamination getting into the spark plug wells? The 2 valve F-150s are pretty notorious for this.

No problem I appreciate you sharing that with me.

No problem, It's scary when you pull plugs like that, the only time I've actually burned a plug like that was on nitrous and I had it pulled too lean. Fortunatly my piston didn't have a hole in it.
However, thats what makes me think that cylinder isn't getting enough gas. The injector could be stopped up, also Have you thought about a compression test?
