and i appreciate the advice Ian

Should read:
Roger Senior Chief, I will stop being a fucktard and beat my face until you're tired

I like how he's somehow on a first name basis with a Senior Chief... A top enlisted Senior Non-Commissioned Officer... And hes a fucking E4 <---supposedly

I really really really wish I could meet this kid...

Which your response should have been" Roger Senior Chief..." Because you have discipline and respect. Right?

If my 1SG or SGM told me to relax, I stay at parade rest, if they say call me Tom, I say roger 1SG... That's how it goes. You'll figure it out one day high speed...

And I agree. Specially when others around. When its just me and my 1sg its one thing behind closed door. But I still.say 1sg/sgm. Never first name. When all us PLT SGT are there its parade rest till told take a seat stand at ease etc. Some of us came up different. To include those above us.

Some kids are taught things at an early age and some have to figure it out the hard way due to lack of common sense.

While I was in AIT back in 1989, my Uncle came to see me since he was at Fort Eustis TDY. He was a LTC back then. I had called the man Chuck my entire life until that point. The Lead Drill SGT, an E8, lead us to a room and allowed us to meet in there. My Uncle asked me all the usual questions and I answered with all the usual, non-complaining answers. The door had been cracked just a bit and unknown to me, my Uncle had told the Drill's to listen in an make sure I showed the proper military respect and to smoke my ass if I didn't.

I had the common sense to call my Uncle "Sir" the whole damned time and when he said, "Well, it's time for this meeting to end, I have shit I have to do Tom", I stood immediately, saluted and said, "Private Tom requesting permission to depart, SIR!" From his still seated position, my Uncle said, "You can just call me Chuck like you always have." Since he had not yet saluted me, I was still at the position of attention and said, "Yes Sir! But if the Colonel doesn't mind, I wish to keep using Sir"

He chuckled, saluted me and dismissed me. THEN, he bellowed for my Drill Sergeants to come in. As I walk out the door, I get a wink from my first line DS.

I was terrified. He had never winked at any of us and thought I must of fucked up. I had been told prior to the meeting to go hang out by the smoking tree once I was dismissed, which I did. I stood there at Parade Rest for almost 30 minutes until my Uncle comes walking out. I go to attention and salute him with the greeting of the day. My Uncle isn't even halfway across the parking lot before I hear, "Private, post your ass in front of the Senior Drill!"

I was congratulated on behaving like a Soldier and given a three day weekend! My Senior Drill asked me, "Private, how did you know to keep it professional even though that was your own Uncle?"

My reply, "Because that man served three tours in Vietnam, he is the person I look up to and finally, because he told me, while giving me a big hug and with tears of happiness in his eyes the day I was leaving for basic that if I ever made the mistake of thinking LTC Chuck was the same as Uncle Chuck, he would personally put a beat down on me."
