Your version of Photoshop doesn't have the pen tool? bummer. ok, im going to set up an example and attach some pictures for you... When you open up your image you must first turn it into an actual layer and not a background image. Make your selection to delete all of the background but...

for our large format and detailed drawings here at work I use the pen tool and create a selection from that. Masking works just as good as anything else as said above.

You'll get there man, just takes a lot of time and cussing. Flash and Illustrator are very similar but Illustrator is more precise in vector art. I noticed you have a deviantart page. You also might want to set a portfolio up on coroflot.com.

You really should Get into both Illustrator and Photoshop. I've been a digital artist and graphic designer for about 10 years now and they are the staple of a digital artist's diet. What part of Texas you from? This is something I brewed up in illustrator/photoshop.
