so Black Friday is coming up and I’m in the market for a new clutch, flywheel and driveshaft! There are quite a few options for clutch/flywheel kits and I’ve recently learned that I don’t want a lightweight flywheel if I’m also getting a lighter driveshaft-thanks to good ol’ Pentalab! The searches that I’ve done so far bring up really old posts and I’d like an updated opinion...

Driveshaft:
Pretty sure I’m set on either the Ford Racing or the Driveshaft Shop 1 piece. - are these both pretty comparable?

Clutch/flywheel:
When I’m done with my build I plan to be 650-ish at the wheels so I’m thinking a stage 4 kit would be best.
Anybody have experience with the paddle/puck style flywheel?

McLeod or Exedy??

What spline with stock GT 5 speed?

Thanks for any opinion in advance

I was pushing 470rwhp through spec 3+ and it was great. Replaced a centerforce clutch that was junk. I dont think you'll find much of a difference in 1 piece shafts

The stock 5 speed is a 10 spline. Are you building or swapping the trans because most upgrade to a 26 spline. A stock trans isn't going to last long with 650hp.

My 1 piece aluminum DS is a DSS... (3.5" OD). They rate em for 900 hp. CV joint at axle end...which is field replaceable for $100.00 They balance them to 9200 rpm, b4 they leave their factory. DSS also made the carbon fiber 1 piece DS for the 13/14 GT-500's. DSS also makes a 1 piece carbon fiber shaft for the S197 cars, but CF is damned expensive, too expensive imo. My issue with CF is, it may well not take a lot of heat..esp with the exhaust on either side of it. Steel shafts typ will have a 6 deg twist, on an auto with foot on brake, and other foot on the gas. Aluminum is 18 deg twist. CF is 24 deg twist. CF might be a few lbs lighter, but the damned things are > $1200.00
With a CV joint at axle end, the pinion angle is not citical.

Shaftmasters doesn't use a CV joint at axle end... pita. Buddy used one and has tweaked his pinion angle at least 4 times now, in tiny increments. It still vibrates, but at 120 mph, so he doesn't go any quicker than 115 mph. And don't use a 4" diameter DS, too big in diam, and can cause issues with that small welded in tunnel brace that some of the cars came with. 3.5" OD is plenty. The DSS is plug n play. But they all have to be installed correctly, with thread locker etc. When I installed the DSS, at the same time, also installed a rear BMR tunnel brace + mating safety loop. Ample room for the 3.5" od DS, with suspension fully loaded, or unloaded (like on a 4 post lift)... or in hard left / right aggressive cornering.

I like my Exedy, and those are cheaper than McLeods if that matters. Beyond the "stage 3" level you are likely to end up with a clutch that can overpower the trans, and with enough grip in the tires you'll send the trans to the grave. You can do a 26 spline input shaft upgrade but you're still left with questionable synchros. The cost of beefing up a 3650 is about the same as getting a rebuilt 6060 with a decent clutch and crossmember.

And Pentalab hit the nail on the head on driveshafts. If you get a used DSS make sure it comes with the adapter plate at the axle end. Those are expensive to replace as they're a proprietary item.

Sorry for the delay, it’s been a hell of a week!
I ended up getting a call from Brenspeed and got a deal on a new driveshaft shop one piece aluminum shaft. Will this come with what I need? I had no idea about the difference in the axle end.
Also I’d like to stay with whatever spline comes stock, which ragtop said is ten. I would eventually like to put a six speed in, but that is definitely a few years down the road. So instead of getting a stage 4/700ftlb rated clutch, I should just be getting a stage two or three to suffice for now?
