    Adjusting pinion bearing preload

Okay, here's my situation: after several attempts at gear repair (roaring above 50 mph), Ford dropped a whole new diff in my car. My understanding is that everything is already put together, so you just swap out the old and new diff, attach the driveshaft, and your done. Well- it whines on decel...

    Adjusting pinion bearing preload

Is it possible to measure/tighten the pinion bearing preload on an 06 GT without tearing down the rear? I believe the preload is too loose causing whine on decel. (I won't get into the specifics). Just hoping it's possible to check/adjust that first before tearing open the diff. I know you can't...

Champion plugs w/ off-center tips - how much does it matter?

I bought the Champion 7989 plugs from Summit Racing about a year ago and am just now getting around to installing them. I've seen a post or two about quality control maybe being subpar, in particular off-center elctrodes as in this pic: I couple of my plugs look like that. My question is...

Why do my gears whine in cold weather only?

Thanks, I'll look into that. It's going in for some warranty work, so I'll just have them check the fluid level. if it's not low, I'll change the oil. My only concern with the Amsoil Severe is that, if it's thicker, wouldn't that possibly make it worse? If the (possible) problem is that the...

Why do my gears whine in cold weather only?

So if it's low, what's the best way to add it?

Why do my gears whine in cold weather only?

If I'm not mistaken, there's no way to check the diff fluid level other than feeling with your finger to see if it's topped off. If it's not, you just add more fluid till it is, correct? Or should I just take off the cover and change the fluid?

Why do my gears whine in cold weather only?

Ford replaced the whole diff - new, unopened from the factory. This was after they tried unsuccessfully to fix gear whine on accel in original gears. They managed to make it worse and also create a vibration (which turned out to be the driveshaft), so they just replaced the whole thing. The...

Why do my gears whine in cold weather only?

So, I have fairly loud whine on coast between about 52 and 40 mph. Definitely gear whine since it immediately goes away on even the lightest throttle. Here's the thing -it's only in cold weather. Right now, it's about 20-30 degrees here in NC and it's very obvious. When the temp gets about 50...

    2010 Mustang Revealed!

""Mustang also features an industry-first Induction Sound Tube (IST), which enhances the driving experience by piping the sound of the induction system directly into the passenger compartment." Yep - they pipe the sound of the air intake into the cabin. WTF.

    Should spark plugs be pulled?

Amazon has it. Or get it direct at kanolabs.com. You won't find it off the shelf anywhere. I'm just gonna use PB Blaster (wal-mart, autozone). Others have with no issues.

    Spark plug removal problem

So who has broken a spark plug when trying to remove it? What was your mileage when it happened? I have 24K miles on my 06 GT and am considering removing them to apply anti-seize to hopefully avoid further problem down the road. For those who have removed then before 30K miles, were they hard...

    Auto trans........ big headache

Well, that makes me feel a bit better. Chances are it's just a set-up issue, and not defective part as you had. Thanks for all the info.

    Auto trans........ big headache

Thanks for that link - I read the whole thread. Geez, I was gonna just live with the whine, but now I'm a bit concerned it could lead to bigger problems. I don't know, it sounds like maybe yours sounded different. You say yours sounded like a flat tire - kind of like a wump wump sound? Mine...

    Auto trans........ big headache

Was yours also kind of like a flutter/whine? I've had and heard louder gear whine before, but it was more of a constant whine. This sounds more like a tire flutter would. Is that simlar to what you had? I'm trying to decide whether to put in new gears, but if I do it and the noise doesn't go...

    Auto trans........ big headache

Did yours also go away in neutral? I'm still not sure if that indicates gears or not - does gear whine go away in neutral? Are the gears still rotating in neutral? For that matter, is the driveshaft rotating in neutral or with foot off gas? Sorry for all the questions, but I've always wondered...

    Auto trans........ big headache

Okay - now you have me worried. Do you mean yours sounded like that and then got worse? Also, to clarify - my flutter/whine disappears immediately on even slight throttle. Let off throttle, it's back. Also, put it in nuetral, goes away. Back in gear, comes back. Is that what yours used to be?

    Auto trans........ big headache

That's different than what I have, which is a flutter-type whine on decel around 55-40 mph. Definitelly not my tranny, since it stays the same if I turn off OD.

    Auto trans........ big headache

What kind of whine is it - decel, accel, constant, mph range, etc.? I'm asking because I have a whine as well which was not improved with new gears.
