Building a Desktop

Hey all,

So I'm in the market for a desktop and am looking to make it moderately powerful for video editing and games. I've had only laptops for almost the past decade and know nothing about the new and current hardware. Last desktop I built was when the Athlon XP 3200+ was the best CPU.

Anyone have any suggestions on hardware? Motherboards, CPU, GPU? I'm looking to spend $600-$800 not including the keyboard, mouse, screen, speakers. I don't need a cd drive either and I don't mind if it's a bit loud on the fans.
