Anti drain back is very important In my opinion. As it keeps the motor primed for cold starts.

Got to the thrust washer. Clearly affecting the crankshaft endplay.

#5 main bearing with the washer still in

So my question now is, what causes a thrust bearing to go out? And how can you prevent it?

Was the correct procedure used to properly locate the #5 main bearing cap before the bolts were tightened?

Do either of you know what the crankshaft end play was when your short blocks were previously assembled?

I will be honest. I have no clue. I'm just a ford technician not an engine builder. I have heard In the past that Manuel
Transmission cars have mote chances of this due to the shock wave from
The clutch. But I'm not sure. I think MMR has something to help this issue if I recall correctly. Or maybe it's just the luck of the draw. Nice to know we figured it out but sucks. Hopefully an engine builder will chime in.

No, my engine was stock...bought the car with 4K miles...
The only thing I had upgraded crank-wise was a McLeod RXT clutch and a ROUSH 12% over-drive crank pulley...

The engine was never opened internally...not until now. sigh

Mine was stock, so however Ford put it together.

Flip the main cap over...

there isn't a top half to the thrust washer on the front side

See the pictures above (post #72)... Yeah I realized after I re-read your post you were referring to the underside of the thrust bearing. I also included pics of the front bearing cap.
