Hi all.

I have a 2013 GT Track Pack and am thinking about putting it in SCCA solo ESP.

Have any of you used the H&R RSS coil-overs for this racing in this class?

More specifically, has anyone used this set with a 175-250 rate spring in the rear? From all of the reading-while-lurking I've done here, I understand that 515 rear spring would be much too stiff (unless they are converting it to the effective spring rate at the wheel?).

H&R sells lower & higher rate set of springs for the RSS, with the lower being F: 570#, R: 460#, so I'm not as worried about the front damping matching a lower rate 550 spring as much as I am worried about dropping from a 460# to a 175-250# in the back.

I have a very specific budget for this build, and the set seems good for the money.

I'm only looking for mono-tubes that are designed to handle the higher spring rates. Are there any other options I've missed?

Thanks,
- Andrew

I have the H&R RSS coilovers with the optional 570/460# springs. The front dampers are adjustable, twelve clicks, one knob adjusts both compression and rebound. The rear dampers are not adjustable. I've only driven it on the street, but FWIW the handling seems very balanced. At least with my setup.

They built me a set of NEW Bilstein monutube coilovers for my 2012 Boss 302
I believe different spring rates can be ordered

Ground Control can upgrade the dampers to higher end double adj monotube Koni's at added cost.
They advertise a kit with double adj front and single adj rear on there site for other makes of car. I would think they can do the same for our Mustangs?

Series 28's??? IIRC, that's the "good" Koni shock- I haven't heard of a 28 series strut though.

OP- Prove to me that the H&R RSS coilovers that you listed are monotube. I just spent a little bit of time here http://www.hrsprings.com/products/coil-overs/ and I don't see ANY thing about monotubes until you get down to the very bottom of the product page and that is talking about a different product than what you have linked to stranoparts.

Trust me, if there is a product and it IS monotube, somebody has really screwed up by not advertising it as monotube. Now I'm not saying they aren't monotube. I'm only saying, make sure you investigate and make sure they are. Because I certainly am not seeing it and H&R definitely does make twin tubes.

It used to be that H&R used bilstein as the base for their products. I don't know if this is still true, but they might tell you if you call and ask.

Thanks. This page indicates they are monotubes, but I will double check:

I just called ground control and spoke with Jay. They don't offer a mono-tube for the Mustang.

We made a set of 28s for a Subaru W2W car. It's definitely a race-only product. I run a set of 28s on my daily driver Miata and rebuild them every 10k miles.

They do offer the Doubles for the S197 chassis, about $2300 IIRC. They are still twin tube though.

Yes they are monotubes. Not exactly proof, but I called Kenny Brown and H&R before I bought them.

That's funny you mention Kenny Briown. His website doesn't even mention that the fronts are adjustable. In fact, they go to the effort of saying they are NOT adjustable. Lol, and the fronts are adj. Advertisement could be better for the H&Rs. It did say "high pressure gas shocks" though which is close enough for a mono tube. I called H&R yesterday and the guy told me the fronts are mono tubes and the rears are twin tube. I still don't like the rear spring rates and if the shocks are damped correctly, they will likely be over-damped if you lower the spring rate into the OPs desired range.

Yeah....those rear spring rates...seems like it's a generic eye-pin coilover, and not something specifically designed for a mustang. 470# rears will be 940# rears when in bump.

After calling around again this morning and specifically asking about the rear dampers this time, it turns out that the rear dampers ARE twin-tube. I'm a bit bent since this wasn't what I was told prior to buying them, but I digress. Supposedly H&R tested this kit with monotubes but couldn't get the rear dampening set to where the ride quality was tolerable. They went with twin-tubes for more compliant dampening.

Twin-tubes are supposedly easier/cheaper to make adjustable so why they're not...?

460# rear springs don't seem nearly as bad as it sounds. The ride quality is much better than the FRPP k's and adj dampers I had before. There's about 1/2" more bump travel up front and about 1/4" more in the rear, than the FRPP dampers. There's also enough spring rate to stay off the bump-stops. The front and rear balance is close. Meaning, sway bar adjustments to dial it in from here. I have the FRPP kit with the front in the middle hole, and I switch between the FRPP 22mm and my oem 20mm rear bar. Track time will decide which rear bar.

I don't need to but, I'd probably try the 630# fronts that came with the kit with the 460# rears before getting softer springs for the rear.
