You know I am really surprised how little excitement the new 6spd auto is generating.

Back in the 60's and early 70's there were a ton of people excited about some legendary standard transmissions.

Here are the stats on the Muncies:

ratiochart.jpg

Chryslers:

1964 thru 1970 B/RB engine

  • 1st 2.66:1 , 2nd 1:91:1 , 3rd 1.39:1
  • 1:1
1970 T/A & AAR 340s/1971-1974 23 spline units
  • 2.47:1
  • 1.77:1
  • 1.34:1
  • 1:1
Fords:

Toploader 4 speed

Close: 2:32 1st , 1:69 2nd , 1:29 3rd , 1:1 4th
Wide : 2:78 1st , 1:93 2nd , 1:36 3rd , 1:1 4th

Now the famous 5 Speed we all love:

TR-3650 used in the 2001-2007 GT
  • 1st: 3.380:1
  • 2nd: 2.000:1
  • 3rd: 1.320:1
  • 4th: 1.000:1
  • 5th: 0.670:1
  • 5th: 0.620:1 (used in 03-04 with 3.55:1 final drive, Mach1)
The wicked 03-04 T-56 Cobra 6 speeds:

Gear Ratio 1st 2.66 , 2nd 1.78 , 3rd 1.30 , 4th 1.00 , 5th 0.80 , 6th 0.63

Todays 6spd std in a 2011 GT:

Standard 6-speed manual

Gear ratios:

1st 3.66
2nd 2.43
3rd 1.69
4th 1.32
5th 1.00
6th 0.65

New 6-speed automatic

Gear ratios:

1st 4.17
2nd 2.34
3rd 1.52
4th 1.14
5th 0.87
6th 0.69

Comparing 245/45R19 tires at 27... inches tall and assuming no trans slippage here is the top speed in each gear shifting at 7000rpm with EQUAL 3:73 gears for both

Auto:

1st 37 mph
2nd 66 mph
3rd 101 mph
4th 135 mph
5th 177 mph
6th 223 mph

Std:

1st 42 mph
2nd 63 mph
3rd 91 mph
4th 117 mph
5th 154 mph
6th 237 mph

That looks pretty impressive.

Now obviously there are slippage factors and such, but I am VERY happy with this new 6spd auto.

AND just for info...

Here are the Chevy 700R's for comparison:

It has a 1st gear ratio of 3.06:1; 2nd 1.62:1 and 3rd gear ratio of 1:1 and .70:1 overdrive

Our trans kicks ass!

Jeff

p/s yes I am doing the 3:73's cause the 3:15 stock is lousy and I wanted to compare apples to apples

My own combo I am putting together is this:

7000rpm shift point
3:73's
28.90 inch tall rear tires

1st 38 mph
2nd 68 mph
3rd 105 mph
4th 141 mph
5th 184 mph
6th 233 mph

Rear suspension mods will be Roush 1" lowering rear springs, passenger side coil air bag, billet lower control arms and adjustable panhard/upper control arm.

Front suspension mods will consist of (BMR tubular K member debating this one) , UPR QA1 front struts and camber plate.

and last but not least BMR boxed weld-on subframe connectors.

Once I get the suspension dialed in I`m hoping the forced induction will be right there waiting :)

wonder how strong they are lol
well if im not mistaken, if you add a "0" to the number thats the torque rating of the tranny...i.e. 4R70W is rated at 700 lb ft. so 6R80 would be rated at 800 lb ft (the 99-04 Lightnings had 4R100W and those trannys were very stout).

i could be wrong but i think im on the right track

You are correct KungFu!

But remember the torque converter! divide by 2 for the final "safe" rating of 400lbs.

Someone will have guts for this trans soon enough to help make it safe to 500 and so on.

eitherway, its much better than a 5r55s.

My dads 09 F150 single cab with 5.4 and 6r80 really drives very smoothly,.

So the new auto does not have a 1:1 direct gear, interesting. 1st gear looks like some sticky tires are a must...haha.

What sucks for the standard guys is the 117mph 4-5 shift

Faster Mustangs with 27 inch wheels will have to shift an extra time in the quarter

tr 6060 is still better as it can handle more torque.
