Hello All:

Steeda continues to have a long-standing partnership with Nitto Tire - we run their tires on many of our street/strip cars and exclusively on our Steeda Performance Vehicles.

Recently, Steeda had the exciting opportunity to perform track-testing for their all new Nitto NT555 G2 tires at Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR) -- what an experience!

We brought out two Steeda S550 Performance Pack GTs with equal entry-level mods (Steeda springs, Steeda IRS subframe bushing support system, Steeda cold air intake, Steeda tune) to perform an apples-to-apples test comparing their existing NT555 tire to their all-new NT555 G2 tire.

60-0 Braking:
This kind of testing solely reflects the capabilities of the tires, brakes & suspension prepared for the Steeda equipped Mustang. From a driver-standpoint, it’s imperative to ensure the brakes are hit at the same point on the track at the same speed with max pressure applied to the brake pedal. This technique allows the vehicle’s Anti-Lock Brake system to do its job at peak performance.

Considering both vehicles were identical in brakes and suspension, the only variable left was the tires being used. Data we gathered shows the NT555 G2 stopping the car in 76.5’ from 60 mph, which is far superior than the current generation NT555 at 96.75’. One thing that these numbers do not show is directional control while applying the brakes - the NT555 G2 had a much more confidence-inspiring feeling transmitted through the steering wheel while the brakes were applied.

Driving Experience:
The NT555 never inspired the high-level of confidence that the G2 did while turning into and exiting the corner. What we mean by that is, the G2 - when turning into a corner - transmitted a feeling of the tires gripping sooner than the NT555 by the vehicle actually turning.

When the driver feels that the vehicle is now changing in the intended direction that the driver had planned, then the driver can place their focus on the exit of the corner maximizing the speed to the next corner; it’s at this point that the driver usually applies throttle to begin the acceleration process.

During the acceleration process out of the turn is when forward grip is critical to achieving a great lap time. The G2 allowed us to not only apply more throttle input, but also had less slip while exiting the corner. When tires slip during exiting a corner, it is usually the rear tires on a rear wheel drive vehicle (such as the S550) resulting in oversteer.

When the rear tires slip while coming out of a corner, they are no longer propelling the vehicle forward and instead, the rear of the vehicle usually begins to slide in the opposite direction of the turn. If the tires are sliding, then the driver has to react while either reducing the throttle, or alter the intended direction of the vehicle to compensate - neither of which help to reduce lap times.

As mentioned above, it is worth noting that the braking feel was considerably different between the NT555 vs G2. The G2 seemed to require less pedal pressure to achieve the same desired braking effect as the NT555 - this resulted in less weight transfer while under braking, and a more stabilized feeling while cornering the vehicle as the weight was not all transferred to the nose at turn-in or corner entry.

NT555 Key Benefits:
- Compound that offers balance between tread wear & traction
- Stable cornering due to reinforced tread blocks
- Wide contact patch

NT555 G2 Key Benefits:
- Cornering stability due to directional tread pattern
- Increased wet traction performance
- Increased braking performance
- Wide contact patch

Steeda Autosports is extremely excited for the release of Nitto’s NT555 G2 line & highly recommend them for the S550.

You can check out our current line of Nitto tires here

Here are some beauty shots of the Steeda Mustangs testing the Nitto tires on the track ... enjoy!

Out of curiosity, will you be able to do any further testing on these in cooler weather? (No idea what your low seasonal temps get down to in that neck of the woods). The reason I ask, the 07 GT I have now, the previous owner at one point had 18" NT-555 on the car, and I remember driving it on track on a cooler fall day here in southern Ontario ... ambient was probably around 50 degrees.

The 555 tires were horrible at that temp, even after several laps to try to build some heat. Understeer in, oversteer out, just no grip at any time through the corners. I understand that these are summer performance tires, but for people living north of you with a "3-season" vehicle, traction on the cooler days in spring and fall can be a concern. And any dampness in the cooler temps made them downright awful. Hopefully the new version have a wider temp range that they will tolerate.

Good points. I swap my NT-555's for Nitto MOTIVO's in october. The NT-555's go back on in the last week of April.

The Nitto Motivo is an excellent rain / low temp tire vs the NT-555. The Motivo's also have better dry traction than a NT-555 in hot wx..and miles ahead in cold wx. Sizes are limited, but the list keeps growing.

The NT-555 is a good DD summer tire. But the Motivo is a better all year round tire..with it's 560 treadwear rating. http://www.nittotire.com/passenger-tires/motivo-all-season-ultra-high-performance-tire/

Comes with a 100,000 km warranty in Canada.... ( 60 k miles in the us)

The NT-555 is dated these days, been around for a looong time, so it's good to see that Nitto has gotten with the program, with the release of it's new g2 version. Dunno why steeda still lists 2 of the NT-555R2 tires. http://www.steeda.com/nitto-285-35r18-nt555rii-tire/ The 555R2 came out 2 summer's ago, and was supposed to be the answer for heavy muscle cars for track use. It was discontinued less than a year later.

Excellent. I'm not personally in the market for tires at that price point / performance level at this time (my 07 is not a DD so I have grippier stuff on it), but I'm guessing that some people might be interested in hearing about how these tires perform in cooler temps.

## That's a huge difference in braking performance.... a 21% redux. 76.5 / 96.75 = .79 (Most S197 cars are in the 103'- 107' range.)

"During the acceleration process out of the turn is when forward grip is critical to achieving a great lap time. ## This new G2 tire sounds like the bomb. Hopefully Nitto will replace the entire NT-555 line up with the new G2 version...and keep the same existing tire sizes available..and perhaps expand upon it. The g2 version is also superior in the rain, that's a huge bonus. If the price of the g2 version remains aprx the same as the old 555, they have a winner on their hands, and cost effective vs performance. The DD crowd will appreciate it. Hat's off to NITTO .

Either that's a typo or I've got a bridge to sell.

I like to see 285/35/20 and 305/30/20 offered. Most likely it will be the same offerings, I love nittos but the lineup has been small.

10 secs a lap faster is nothing to sneeze at.... esp in the wet. Either the original 555's are crap..or the new 555-G2's are the bomb. The 555-G2 version appears to stop a lot quicker vs the 555.

If these are legit numbers, pretty impressive tire. If it can be the same price as the current 555, even better

Sounds okay. Thanks for someone doing some comparison between the two. Need new skins for my 14 project. Guess no one did any comparison on 0-60 improvement due to grip from a dig? Any chatter about price difference? Is this a direct replacement for the 555 series or an added line to Nitto? Inquiring minds...LOL!

It appears per Nitto's site that the NT-555-G2 is now available. Nitto also list the existing NT-555. So it looks like, for the moment, that both versions are available. I suspect that once the G2 production is ramped up, the NT-555 will be phased out.

Both the wet + dry specs are a full notch up on the G2. The tread wear is now slightly higher @ 320

The NT555s were pretty shit, IMO. Anything with any sort of power would roast them.

Why aren't the new tires being compared to the NT555r?

The 555-R has the same tread pattern as the 555. The 555-R only has a tread wear rating of 100, and is only 5/32" depth new. The g2 vs 555-R would be a good comparison though...provided it was done on a road course, with 30-32 psi.

THE 555R WAS A DRAG TIRE

You guys might be thinking of the 555R2, the slightly more shit NT01.

No, I'm just not familiar with Nittos. I recall hearing (reading) that for high horsepower cars if you wanted traction on the street you ran NT555r's instead of NT555's.

So I assume the NT555r's would be closer to something like the Mickey Thompson ET Street radial?

555 = summer tire
555 gen 2 = better summer tire than 555
555R = drag radial
