Steet Tires and 4.10's

Im fixing to add a Spydershaft to my car and am on the fence about whether to do 4.10's at the same time. Im keeping the Pirellis.

My best 60' on the stock 3.55's and Pirellis is 1.89...
I have heard of people cutting 1.79's with the Pirellis and 4.10's.
I have also heard of people claiming they saw no improvement with stock tires.

Currently trapping 6350-6600 rpm in 3rd depending on weather.
Im planning on keeping the pirellis for a while. Also N2O may enter the picture at some point.

I currently leave around 4000 rpm with some clutch slip and tire spin but when the car hooks it yanks my rpms
back down into the 2500 rpm range which causes it to bog a bit until it gets back up over 3000 rpm.

4.10's or not?

i would recommend looking into the future, are you planning on going FI or Nitrous then go 3.73, but if staying NA go 4.10, i went 4.30 but when i got the kb i went back to 3.55

so i would say look at possible future mods and you may save some cash

I have the Spydershaft and 3:55's and am happy with the performance. Do the d/s and see what you think before pulling the trigger on lower gears. JMO~

I will say this, when you do go to 4.10's you will love the new found acceleration right up to the time you dicide to make a 400 mile trip one way, and your mpg is about 18 and your motr is turning 3k at 80 miles and hour. With that being said I kept the 4.10's and bought an 02 Taurus for road trips. I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY GEARS.............for the simple reason that every once in a while I run up on s95 cobra and take him. He's so used to beating the stock 197's that it totally f$%ks with his head.

GET THE 4.10's if you go F/I then go back

When I had 4:10's installed my mileage dropped like terry said. I don't know what the mileage would have been if I ran 80 on the highway. But it was right at 22 running 75 or so. Before the gears it was getting 25 at 85. Now that I have a turbo installed I am seriously thinking about going back to the stock 3:55 gears. I love the way the car pulls with the turbo/4:10's but it revs so fast it seems like I am on the rev limiter before I am ready for it. Might be that it will take a little while for me to get use to it so I plan to give it a couple of months before I decide. Of course I lowered my rev limit with the turbo because I don't think the motor would last very long pulling to 6500 with the turbo.

You have to look at what you want and make a descion on that. I have 4.30 gears in my car. I run a 28 DR at the track, at the stripe I am 6100 in 4th gear hitting 123 MPH. On the street I run the Saleen 20's. I drive it sometimes, not too often, but I am right around 2400-2600 in 5th gear at 75-80 mph. I get around 24-25 mpg too. Plus in 5th gear, at 75 if I floorboard it, I get 11lbs of boost instantlly, so the car pulls it ass off! Nothing like killing hondas and slowmarows with even down shifting!:naughty:

Well, no doubt you doing a great job with the stock tires so far. But 4.10s+N20+stock tires = waste of time.

Unless you plan on using the sauce in 3rd and 4th. Now get a good dr, a window switch for 3000 rpm, and N20 will get you out of the hole quick.

I wasnt planning on running the N2O with stock tires and 4.10's.

I was simply stating that because of results I have seen with a couple of New Edges. In the 1/8 mi the 3.73 geared car is 2/10 faster than the 3.27 geared car NA. With spray the 3.27 geared car is a 1/10 faster. In otherwords is their any advantage to 4.10 in a N2O car.

My thought on that is the advantage would go to the car with 4.10s---assuming that both cars are hooking---because the car with 4.10s will hit the 3000 rpm window sooner, and be on the sauce before the car with the 3.27's.

The only thing I could think of is, if the 4.10 car were to run a short tire, and your off the sauce above 6000rpm, then the top end could be a factor where the 3.27 geared car wouldn't have that problem.

So I would ask myself---how tall of a tire are you going to run, how high in the rpm range are you going to use the sauce. 4.10s are good for 132mph at 6500 rpm with a 28 tall tire, but maybe you plan on using the n20 only to 6000. So I would use the 6000rpm to decide gearing choice for example.

By the way, the race that you mentioned above---do you have access to there timeslips? I would be interested to compare the 60'times and confirm that both cars hooked out of the hole.

Street Tires, Same Mods (Other than Gears), Nitrous Express Wet kit w/ 150 bhp jets. Neither sprays until 2nd gear.

60' 1.9x 3.73
60' 2.0x 3.27
NA 3.73 is 2/10 faster in the 1/8.
N2O 3.27 is 1/10 faster in the 1/8.
3.73 was 6100 rpm in 3rd in the traps.
Multiple Runs. They are good friends.

The 3.73 would pull out a slight lead out of the hole. My best guess is the 3.73 spun a little on the 1-2 shift so slightly delayed Nitrous activation where as the 3.27 was able to get on it immediately. The 3.27 would then begin to gain on the 3.73 when it held 2nd gear longer. Once the 3.27 shifted into 3rd it carried more speed and about the 600' mark he would ease on by. The 3.27 would pick up a full second where as the 3.73 only picked up 7/10. This result has always puzzled me.

I will ask Scott if he has any old slips. I suspect they are now the property of his X-Wife though.
