Terry,
I am running the stoptech front brakes, ST-40s with the 355mm rotors, the rotors seem to sit a bit further inboard than the Brembos do. Do you know if these cooling kits will fit them as well?

I had the standard non-brembo brakes and the backing plate for those will not fit.

The ford racing ducts fit on st60 380mm rotors very nicely. It almost sealed off the center hat area. YMMV

Well...I finally have a plan. It's a 2-year plan. Knowing that, it will change 127 times between now and September 2016.

My codriver and I are going to SCCA Nats next year, and the car is going to be actually an ESP car? Why?

And these guys are hopefully gone
Fostoria_Oct_09_heat3_16.jpg

The SEB has made some nice things happen with the parts allowances. I hope they stick. The Hoosiers I've been running for the last four events are stupid. WOW levels of grip. Just now, at the last event, I got a shock/pressure/bar setup to work. Once that happened, my codriver and I started dropping seconds...my codriver ended up within speaking distance of another ESP driver who should have trophied at nationals who was on new A6's in a pretty light F-body. I know it's one datapoint...but I feel like the car, with actual autocross prep (it's really better for a track right now), could have a chance. "The getting is good" in ESP for next year...Madarash is gone, hopefully the WRX'es are out, seems ripe for the taking. I'm not expecting to win, but maybe my codriver can scare some people.

His fast run from yesterday:

So what is this autocross prep I have to do? It will go in a couple phases. 2015 will be the "how far do I want to take this" year. I will finish doing the major things I haven't done yet- Watt's link, Headers, battery, get all my bearings/bushings straightened out, change front spring rate, do a splitter & spoiler, and TEST TEST TEST, and get the car 100% ESP legal. I have a couple things...tie rod ends and a cut front fascia, that no one cares about regionally (helps when you're solo chair, heh) that will need to be rectified, and some road racing parts that need to come off.

So this build thread might become active again, and will actually be autox focused again. I'm not doing solo chair again next year, so I'll actually be able to focus on driving at the events, so that's good.

If the 2015 experiment goes well, the 2016 experiment could get crazy, like "I want to win" crazy.

Stay tuned...

Cool. Looking forward to the posts.

From what I understand of the rules, the only thing moving you from STU to ESP now (as of 2015) is the tires. The Watts link and arms/brackets are or are becoming legal. Finally.

Both tire size AND tire compound are moving him. I don't think he wants to go back to skinny tires, no matter how good the compound is.

LOL. Didn't see any mention of tire size. I kind of miss running R-compounds; I'll get to ESP eventually.

I had previous knowledge of his current setups that he posted earlier, and inside knowledge of where he plans to go. :whistling:

So...some progress on "partial retard." Not going full retard until 2016...maybe the car should be called "not-so-simple Jack."

How the car sits now:
15197714309_f7c605eaf3_b.jpg

With a 1/2 tank is weighs in just shy of 3500#.

Anyway...some stuff I have now.

Got the Watt's on- (not my picture or car, but pictures are fun.) From doing some road "testing" I'm pretty happy with it. It's not quite a supercharger for my suspension, but it seems to "take a set" in a corner a bit quicker now, and from my slalom-ing of the paint stripes in the road, the L-R-L-R transitions now feel the same in each direction, and the "transition time" seems to be shorter, so that's cool. Granted...all of this is qualitative, and potentially "I just put this expensive part on my car and I need to justify the cost" sentiment, so take it with a grain of salt.

"But Mark, isn't lightness the goal for autocross? Why did you put that big heavy Watt's link on there?"

Surprisingly...there isn't a lot of weight added. Between the panhard bar, panhard brace, and stock diff cover coming off, and the actual reduction in overall length of tubing with the watt's, I'd be surprised if the weight difference between aftermarket PHB, stock diff cover, and stock PHB brace and WL Watt's is outside of 5-10lbs. Seems like the Watt's diff cover is the most substantial part, along with all the extra hardware. Again...musings...but it's not as much of a weight gain as I initally expected.

WhitelineWatts1.jpg

And I've begun to stockpile 315/30/18 A6's. This is 10 of them, all scrubs of varying levels of wear (one really good set, one pretty ok set, and one May-Pop set), and there are 2 more tires down in Dallas that I need to go get sometime. This will give me three sets...and I'll buy some stickers for 2015 Solo Nats, which, incidentally, just had their 2015 dates released. Sept 1-4....book your hotel.

New springs came in. They're....well they're stiff. These will go on this week and I'll test them Sunday...hope for good results. The front is going to get lowered as much as possible too, probably another inch over where it is now.

15296213857_dd0f961f9c_b.jpg

Stuff to come off the car this week-
-Roll bar (~65lbs)
-Tow hook (~5lbs)
-Brake ducting (~2lbs)

This should get me down to the low 3400's in autox trim, and between the light battery, some future exhaust work, maybe the brakes, and a couple control arm swaps, I'm looking to dip into the 3390-3410 range. Doable? Maybe....will report on weight probably in December, when most of the major weight reduction is done. Been thinking about ditching the WL front swaybar (solid spring steel) in favor of a hollow one as well. The rear is staying. The ability to adjust it in less than five minutes without jacking up the car is a compromise I'm willing to live with. Of all of the "quick and easy" tuning I can do, the rear bar stiffness seems to be up there with shock rebound and tire pressure as far as the magnitude of impact on the car an adjustment has. I'm willing to live with the extra weight for that.

This thing is HEAVY!!! It will go back in eventually...once I'm done with the autox thing in this car. The medium term plan is to do probably two Solo Nationals in this car, then acquire a Lotus 7 clone and turn the Mustang into a full blown track/race car.

ESP rules question for the peanut gallery- can I remove the windshield washer fluid reservoir? It's not on there right now, and if it doesn't have to be I'll leave it off, but if it does, it goes back on. Thanks!

All this weight reduction to the car... No idea what you weigh, but I hear personal weight reduction might be cheaper and more effective ;-) even if it's just a good ol' trip to the bathroom morning of Nats

I'm leaving most of the personal weight reduction to the codriver...I've got a ways to go but it's being worked on, more for racing reasons than any other. Motivation is motivation, I guess.

I love my WL Watts. I had to "relearn" the car when I installed that and the Truetrac at the same time. It definitely lets you dart around confidently. With the stock panhard, I would have these sudden upset moments with the car during high speed sweepers, and it would just lose its shit without warning. I have yet to experience that with my new rear end combo.

VVVVVV That cone swipe was on the stock panhard.
