"Optimum" cannot have a single definition once you're considering more than one aspect and assign different weight to each aspect than somebody else does. But if you really are putting performance first, you have to accept some sacrifices in other areas.
It's OK to dial back to a less-extreme-performance compromise point if you don't like the look or aren't as demanding, as long as you recognize that some performance is being left on the table by doing so. Here, it's just that your preferred compromise is different from mine and apparently Jim's, and occasionally a little different from what gets fitted as OE.
