Ok, so the answer to the "piston slap" noise is a flash of the PCM.

So how does that work??? Surely it cant be a "clearance" issue if a PCM flash fixes it.

Is the slap really detonation and the flash pulls timing or adds fuel?

If so, does that tie in with #8 going south?

no way. cam timing

Piston slap sucks but won't kill the motor. I have a '99 Chevy truck (LS motor) that I bought new. It has had piston slap since early on. Took it to the dealer and was given the "it's normal for these motors" reply. Well I still have the truck, it has 80,000 miles on it now and no issues. I have beat on it some and also towed a 5500lb trailer for many years and it still is fine. Not saying I like the idea of piston slap but I have been through it. I hope my new '12 doesn't do it.
