I had posted before about what was the best gear for Magnum XL with the 2.97 first gear. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a 4.56 specifically with the Magnum. Surely someone has tried it.

4.56 just come off as to deep unless you got an auto running 1/8th

some people love it though. I think it makes you come out of 1st to soon and takes away from the top end of power adder cars.

I would think your 4.10s are fine

Don't have the Magnum but I have ran 4.56's with my GForce geared 5 speed, I was grabbing 4th at the 500 foot mark and that made for a LONG 4th gear pull on the 1/4.

Since that T56 is geared lower than mine, with a 28" tire you'll be a shifting MOFO also having to catch 4th to make it thru the 1/8th.

Look's like 4.10's are your best choice.

I already have to go to 4th in the 1/8th, because the T56 3rd is lower than the 3650's. I thought the 4.56 would give that 4th gear some pull.

I shift at 6300-6500. I have to go to 4th right before the finish line. I'm only in 4th for a second, but can't make it through in 3rd

You could probably get away with a 3.73 or 3.90 gear and stay in 3rd of go to a taller tire.

I can't go with a taller gear due to the 2.97 first gear of the Magnum. The 4.10 was perfect with the 3650, but the magnum first gear is so tall, it took away my first gear pull. Very odd gearing in the magnum to be considered a drag ratio.

With out doing the math, a 4:56 with a 2.97 , should be very close to a 4:10 with stock 3.38 in first, but as you go thru the gears it will be a big difference. Add a 28" tire add should be good.

I have a 28 inch tire, always have. So the 3650 with 3.34 first gear with 4.10's was perfect. The 2.97 first in the T56 is taller, hence my problem. Hoping 4.56 will put first gear oomph where it was before

Hmmm. In your case, I would try raising your shift points a bit. That should allow you to cross the traps at the peak of 3rd gear. You may have traction issues when you swap to a 4.56's.

2.97 is the same as a 6060. As you have probably already found out the 4.10 work almost like 3.55 with the 3650. 4.56 are fairly close to 4.10 with a 3650.

I'd say go with 4.56 or 4.88. I've had 4.56 with my 6060 and it wasn't too much gear. In fact I'm thinking of swapping my current 4.10 for 4.56. The thing is that I can't find a good reason to do it other than insanity. If I was putting new gears in they would be 4.56.

Once you drive it you will know that 4.56 was the right choice. After a few weeks you will wonder if 4.88 would of been better.

Play with this for awhile and see if anything jumps out at you: http://www.wallaceracing.com/calcmph.php

Thank you very much, for an informed answer from someone who has actual experience with the ratio of trans and gear. It just seemed like everyone thinks 4.56 is too much gear, but they don't have experience with the tall first gear. Thanks

That's a great calculator, BruceH. It shows that 4.10 with 3650 first gear, is almost identical to 4.56 with T56 first gear. I am installing Ford Racing 4.56's today. Hopefully the weather will be good enough in the next couple weeks to go test. We are lucky enough to have 5 tracks fairly close that will test as long as it is 50 degrees, year round.

I have them installed, and love them on the street. Car feels like a beast, and only turns 2500 rpm at 70 mph, with the deep 6th gear overdrive. Perfect gearset for me. Hadn't got a chance to go to the track and test yet, due to axle issues. My strange street axles were starting to twist the splines. Also, they were loose in the spool, which was causing a lot of clunking. I have put my factory locker in for a while, to do some street running. I'll get some results after I get some alloy axles from strange, and get my spool put back in. I only got 15 passes out of the last brand new traction-loc I installed and ran on drag tires. And usually, when the spider gears bust, it takes out the gear. So I have to wait til I get the spool and axles back in.

Could always do the 2.66 magnum with a 4.56. It'll have the .50 6th gear too, so you'll still get some MPG's.

Thats my plan.
