What are your thoughts?

Ron I have a valentine 1, you get some false alarms but when their is radar you know it. You will be able to distinguish between false alarms and radar after having the radar unit for bit.

Escort Passport 8500 x50--delivers great sensitivity on X, K, and Ka bands.

Also has a separate laser jammer you can add on if you like.

Laser jammers are not illegal. Radar jammers are illegal.

Laser is controlled by the FDA. Radar is controlled by the FCC.

I have been thinking about getting the Escort version of this to go with my 8500 x50 but at $400 a pop, that's a mite too high fer me!!

Don't which one is better, but maybe this site will help you.

http://www.radarbusters.com/

Does anyone have one of these and if so does it really work?

That stuff from Rocky Mountain is bullshit. It does not work.

A properly installed laser jammer will work, because as soon as it detects laser, it shoots out a glaring infared source of light that basically blinds the receiver on the laser gun. If you rely on hearing the laser alarm on your detector, all that means is that you've just been clocked.

True of radar unless you are in traffic on the highway

On the "fun and empty roads" (which is where you should be doing your real speeding ;-)), you are likely going to hear the first and only signal and it was the one pointed at you...

I dunno, I have talk to and lived with too many cops to be too excited regardless of capabilities - a good traffic cop will get you anyway...

Planning? I think you missed some of Ron's posts... His typical commute to work is a felony:samuri::laughlots:

I know Ron very well.... I was poking fun.....

and I'm sure such a device will come in handy on his ride back up north!

Instant on in a remote area with little traffic does have the highest probability of nailing you.

I started 22 years ago with the original Escort by Cincinatti Microwave (I still have it and it still works). I learned a lot listening to that old detector. Weak K brap and silent I knew I was approaching a cop running instant on. Damn is that thing ever sensitive on K band.

I do the same thing today with the Escort 8500 X50. I hear the brap or the "geiger" click and I know there's probably a cop around somewhere, especially since I know where all of the door openers and shit are that give false alarms.

I had the damnest thing happen the other morning on the way to work. The Garland TX mounties were running laser in an unmarked car. He was sitting in a place he usually sits so I knew to be wary of that area in the first place. However, well before I got there, my K band was starting to alert me that a bogie was ahead; this K band warning was in a place I usually don't get a signal. A mile later, I spotted him and my laser detector went ape shit. I started laughing. I was well aware a cop was around so I was doing 40 in a 40. However, the numbnutz had left his damn radar unit ON while he was running laser! I thought, yeah, I just wonder how many people with GOOD radar detectors figured your smart ass out and just cruised on by! I waved at him as I passed just to piss him off.

It is a cat and mouse game. However it is also like sex with a stranger. It doesn't hurt to have a condom handy. Protection is good because you never know what's ahead! However, if you are going to invest in protection, get a top dollar unit like the BEL, Valentine, Escort. Those other things are just pieces of shit that bleed microwave energy out and set-off GOOD detectors! You wouldn't wrap willy in a cheap rubber, now would you?

I do think they've got the upper hand with laser. That's why I think a jammer is the only way to defeat this dratted invention!

Hope this helps.

Well, I don't know about that particular guy, but it isn't unheard of for them to just park a visible car and blast a radar gun in a nasty area to get people to slow down when there have been lots of complaints or accidents...

Depends on whether they have quotas, where they are in their quota, whether they feel like getting out of the car that day, etc...

Not sure how effective that would be with a laser, so your explanation is equally, if not more plausible...

That's one thing I like about this area WRT to traffic - except when there is a budget crunch, they are very good about pulling over the people that need pulling over and otherwise staying out of the way...

I've had 2 recent instances where as Mike said the detector starts going off for K band and then a mile or so down the road I get hit with the laser. My Escort 8500 has paid for itself on more than one occasion. I occasionally like to let someone else be the lead dog and I just pace myself a mile or so behind them and let them get the first hit.

Montreal Qc,
I have the Bel Sti Driver which has saved me too many times to count.
The best thing about the STI Driver is that it is the only totally undetectable radar detector which is important if you live in an area where radar detectors are illegal.
The only negative comment everyone has is that the audio warning is not nearly linear enough. It is either fast or slow.
I run with X band off since it isn't used in my area and it eliminates quite a few false alarms.

If I didn't need an undetectable detector my first choice would be the Valentine 1 and nothing else.
The advantages of the V1 are the patented directional arrows which helps you locate the threat and the bogey counter which tells you how many different radar signals are being picked up.
The V1 does not give up anything in sensitivity either.

Both of these detectors have a tech mode which displays the actual frequency you are encountering.
The bottom line where radar detection is concerned educating yourself in what type of radar is being used by law enforcement in the area you are passing through is essential.
By knowing the frequencies used you can more accurately judge if alerts are legitimate radar hits or false alarms.

As far as laser jammers are concerned the 2 best right now are the Laser Interceptor and the Laser Pro Park with the Blinder in 3rd place.

My money is on the Laser interceptor but there have been a few issues with the plugs on the heads which is why I'm patiently waiting on what transpires.

As it has been mentioned before the 2 best forums for more info are http://www.radardetector.net and http://www.guysoflidar.com

spotter FTW - you can almost always find someone on the road crazier than you are - if not, you might want to think about the possible ramifications of that fact...:samuri:
