What's a good mid-grade scanner that will work on a 2006 GT? Does the S197 use the CAN protocol?

I think many people here use their handheld tuner to scan for codes. I use my SCT X3.

Above is a good answer.. Your hand held for codes and it can also data log. If you need something better than that, there are always Rotunda's scanners.

It was mandated for 2008 but many vehicles (S197s) had it before then.. Note pins 6 and 14 on your diagnostic port.

Now that the CANbus question has been answered.. it off to Chit-Chat.

If you don't want to spend the money on a hand held tuner and just want a code reader Actron sells them for $50 to $130 dollars and you can find them at most auto stores, I can't remember the model of mine but you can also data log with it.

I really like my Aeroforce Interceptor. Scans on the go and serves as a multifunction gauge as well. A little pricy compared to a basic scanner but worth it IMHO if you only need it for one vehicle. I have the Actron scanner as well, but never use it.
