This is just a minor thing but I just wanna clear it up...

Now I know over there, there is different names for stuff, so names I have for stuff will be met over there with blank stares... I am already aware of the following:

AUS. - USA

Bonnet - Hood
Boot - Trunk
Extractors - Headers

..and the funniest one I know of is what we call "Allen keys" which over there you call "hexagonal wrenches". God, the parents tried to buy some a while back... took them forever to explain...

Anyway, I'm goin' off on a tangent, what I wanna clarify is: What in the USA is deemed as a supercharger? I have seen just about anything that has to be bolted called a supercharger...

My current understanding is that this is a supercharger:

And this is a turbo:

So is it people over there advertising turbos as superchargers or simply just a different naming convention? It's just been bugging me for a while...

yes you are correct...

a supercharger is belt driver while a turbo is exhaust driven

don't forget centri superchargers as well... they look similar to a turbo but are belt driven

that style of supercharger is a root style/ twin screw which means it bolts on top of the motor which will replace the upper manifold. With the twin screw/root style you will boost right away

the other style of supercharger which bolts to the front of the block is called a centrifugal supercharger and that is used to increase the power by increasing the amount of air that's entering the engine. This type of supercharger can look like a turbo, with the exception that instead of exhaust gases driving the compressor the compressor is driven from the crank by a belt. This means that the centrifugal design provides little boost at lower RPMs. in some cases allowing air to pass back through the supercharger, (why we have bypass valves for them) such as during deceleration.

Ohhh... see I knew the difference between the roots style chargers versus a normal turbo but I have just never seen those belt driven ones that have the look of turbos... weird. It's like some weird hybrid version of the two... my personal opinion is if you get a blower it should be on top and if its hanging off the side it's gotta be a turbo, none of this weird lookin stuff... lol.

actually, you can make some serious power with centrifugal blowers. Procharger D1SC or an F1A or s Paxton Novi 2200 or a Vortech T trim or YSI will put you back in your seat and each of those companies hold some high records. Esp Prochargers which in my opinion are the best!

and there's a new unit out that has two differnent drives....a belt for off the line torque and exhaust gas (turbo) for high end mph and high end hp. it's called a
turpercharger

it's new and going to be the latest greatest badest fastest FI component yet to be invented....stay tuned

I wish the centri's would whine like twin screw but would have a blow off valve like a turbo :) best of sound in both worlds lol

The whine of a blower over the top of a V8 rumble is like the best noise in the history of ever... :p

Actually, while on this topic... What do you guys think the dealer-installed cost would be on a FRPP 'charger? I wanna keep my warranty but I know a dealer will charge me an arm and a leg for it... Thoughts?

I've heard boot & bonnet, never "extractor"

We call them allen wrenches too, at least around here.

Have you heard the older mustangs with centri's? Not the twin screw whine, they whistle.

having a blower installed by a dealer will be useless. From what i've seen, you cant go above 6lbs or it voids the warrenty. And you use the base line aftermarket stuff to run it. Not worth it. It's either fuck the warrenty or pay a arms worth for very little

I can only speak for what we charge, but we (Westland Ford) generally charge anywhere from 8-10 hours for an intercooled Whipple kit. Shop rate is different from dealer to dealer, but expect around $90/hour shop rate. So figure anywhere from $700-$1000 labor at a dealer. The non intercooled kit we charge 4 or 5 hours I think.

Now, like mentioned, the HO kit kills your warranty, dealer installed or not. The non HO kit is overpriced IMO, and not worth running it to simply save your warranty.

we did that... lol... put a BOV in the piping of a YSI... that way we can control how much boost it gets...

Thanks haha... I think it was just those belt driven ones that look like turbos that have been whats thrown me off... just seen a few adverts with one image that looks purely like a turbo, hence me asking...

Yeah, I started calling them headers after my first trip the the States but extractors is what they were called when I bought 'em for my car here...

Now, like mentioned, the HO kit kills your warranty, dealer installed or not.
Stuff it then haha... I bought the Certified car for a reason, not gonna ditch my warranty, I'll just stick to hotrod cams and lowering springs etc.

Thanks for the responses guys! :D

I'm pretty sure cams will void your power-train warranty. But it's worth it IMO. :) I have Hot Rods and I love them. But, I've been out of warranty for a long time anyway.

Oh dear, now I have conflicting info from all over the place... :p

First stop once I'm there is the dealer though to ask some questions... :thumb2:
