Here is the deal.. this is actually for a 1998 explorer with a 4.0.
My brother n law bought a new battery and hooked it up backwards. He replaced a bunch of fuses and now the batt would not charge. He then replaced the alt.. no luck and then called me.
I checked the batt charge bulb (works). That is actually a 60ohm bulb and in parallel with the system. If the bulb burns out, the alt won't charge. That and the #15 fuse and socket are also good.
Voltage coming from the distribution box (to excite the alt field) is only .3 volts. That is the power source that is normally used to excite the alt field (at the I post at the alt). I even tried to jump the alt field I post and no luck getting the alt to work.
Continuity checks from the distribution box to the A sense also. When I jump the I post on the alt, the alt does not start but I do get 1.5 volts output from the alt. Yes, 1.5 volts.. Now, when I try to jump the I post on the alt, I do get the charge light to extinguish and still .3 volts at the 30 amp fuse in the power distribution box. battery side of the mega-fuse is batt voltage, the other is 1.5v when the jumper wire is hooked up.
I also checked the continuity of the alt cable, and all the grounds
Any ideas? I am not sure how complete this diagram is..
I "think" it may be a bad mega-fuse.. as looking at the diagram it would make sense that would need to be in tact for system continuity to the batt.. I did have continuity from the two posts of the mega-fuse tho..
