Mondo as a BOV... too loud for a street car.

I did some reconfiguring under the hood yesterday, and now have my Vortech Mondo set up as a blow-off valve rather than a bypass like it was before. It vents straight to atmosphere, and sounds like a scramjet buttfucking a rocket engine. This will sound super bad-ass at the track, but is far too loud for a street car.

Is anyone running a BOV with any sound reduction? Probably not, since most guys try to make theirs louder for perceived street cred (shit's REAL here in Texas, lol) but I'm not concerned with that. I just want it to be quieter.

Options...

  • I've thought about plumbing a hose to the rear of the car, where I wouldn't hear it so much, but it'll still be loud.
  • A smaller, quieter BOV isn't really an option for me, since I'm running 18 psi or so now.
  • Build a 2" muffler of some sort. Thought about a breather, but those are too small and probably wouldn't help much.
  • Send it back to the air inlet again, but that would be complex and probably wouldn't do much good.
  • Send it to the exhaust? Sounds crazy.
  • Foam in the outlet? Sounds dangerous.
  • Vortech sells a filter, but not too much info on that out there.
Anyone? Thanks.

Don't go into boost on the street, problem solved. :)

But in all seriousness, with the pressure you are running it might be tough to quiet it down. Recir will quiet it down some but I'm not a fan of recir since you're reintroducing hot air back in the system and then Texas heat on top of that...yikes IAT's. I did have a friend buy a molded radiator hose and dumped it straight down so you heard more engine noise than bov noise. btw where is the bov on your setup, I couldn't see it in the pic?

It's closed and therefore silent when I'm in the boost. It's when I'm cruising and it's open that it's ridiculous.

Excellent point, thank you. That eliminates the recirc option... aint no way I'm going to allow higher IATs. I'm sitting pretty at 132 degrees in the summer heat right now and loving it.

It's right off the air/air intercooler, so hidden behind the front bumper. You also may have noticed no MAF in the air inlet. That's over by the throttle body now, blow-through... more on that later.

OK, mission accomplished.

Inspired by that guy on the other forum, I went and got a small K&N filter with a 1.5" opening, a PVC reducer from Home Depot, and a piece of 2" hose I had laying around. Like I said, Vortech sells the right size filters, but I didn't want to wait 2 weeks for Summit to get me one. I also bought a cheap Fram air filter and liberated a few inches of the filter material, then wrapped the inside of the K&N filter with it. $28 total, I think.

I also had to turn the Mondo to the right, so the front wheel didn't hit it. No biggie, took 5 minutes.

It's amazing how quiet this thing is now. No whistling, no rushing air sound. I can still hear the Mondo crack open quite loudly when I'm getting on it, but just cruising, it's very silent.

This very phallic photo was taken inside the driver's side front bumper...

I love the way my mondo sounds. Well it is a draw through set up so it is muffled.
Yeah, when it was draw-through, it was fine. Venting to atmosphere, way too loud for me. I'm not adverse to some noise, but it was pretty ridiculous... unless you're on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious or whatever. :beerdrink:

Lesson learned: when using the Mondo as a blow-off valve (and not a bypass), spend the extra $20 on the Vortech sound filter that goes on the discharge port. They should include it with the valve, considering they're $300, but they don't.

I told him not to do it.. Its like neutering your dog.. it just doesn't feel right..

now that you got it capped are you sure its not forcing air back in?

I'll be making a new thread about the whole setup, as soon as I get "after" dyno numbers on Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Update: I just got the 2x5" filter available from Vortech, part number 8H070-070. It was $60 shipped. I decided to try this because the smaller one pictured above got launched into low Earth orbit during a WOT run. :beerdrink:
