I don't think the apartment complex covers anything i brought that up to them and they said they had nothing to cover, no liabilities, nothing.

The only coverage you would have would be the auto insurance company.

You have renter's insurance right? I think all apartments require it, thus their zero liability policy since they require it. I know my renter's insurance(liberty mutual) covered my vehicle parked in my apartments parking spaces as they asked me about my vehicles info when I got my renter insurance quote, just a thought.

God forbid you had caused an accident and someone was killed with no insurance.

Wow, sorry about your loss. I'd be interested in knowing how it started like others. Arson was my first thought too.

Man, that is a bag of suck I'm glad I don't have to carry around.

Good luck to you on dealing with Ford if it's a design flaw. If it was arson, life is gonna be tough for awhile. Look into getting a scooter for awhile.

I hate to add to your misery but you might be getting a bill from the fired department. Usually they will just bill your insurance company but since you didn't have insurance....

Looks like your only recourse is going to be to take it to Ford, and hope that they make it right. Car fires like that are not uncommon at all. They are almost always electrical in nature, and it is usually a defective electrical component that is the cause. You need to A) keep on the fire department to find the cause of the fire. They may not be able to isolate the exact component that was bad, but they can determine that the car caught on fire by itself. B) Contact the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). They investigate all vehicle defects and issue recalls. You can file a case online at nhtsa.gov. Don't just file the case online though. Find a phone number and call them...every day if you have to. C) Contact Ford. Start with your dealership and work your way up. Document EVERYTHING! Don't be threatening (at first). Ask for help. Also, talk to as many ford techs as you can to see if there are any known problems. If being nice gets you nowhere (likely), then get serious. Tell them that you are following up with the fire department, that you have filed a claim with the NHTSA, that you are aware of other similar incidents with these vehicles, and are trying to contact the owners in pursuit of a class action lawsuit. D) If you need to, lawyer up. You will probably need to make this a full time job...calling and writing letters every day. As one of the first ones to have this happen, its going to be extremely difficult. Hopefully Ford will find the problem, issue a recall, and take care of their customers.

Cars just don't catch on fire sitting in a parking lot off.

Yes they do. I saw an F-150 go up in flames on my college campus that was off with no one around.

OP sorry to hear about this. That is awful.

damn, that is terrible... you pissed anyone off lately ? Arson was my first thought as well, but I'm sub'd to see what comes of it.. Not having insurance is mofo though. if they don't find a cause that Ford covers you're pretty much screwed out of your car.

Thank you for the helpful reply, unlike many others just focusing on my fucking insurance. This thread was about the 5.0 catching and just going up on flames, not about my insurance. If this is an issue that us 5.0 owners actually will have to fear, then i think it would be wise if we all just keep the insurance comments in our asses and focus on the real problem. That way when i found out what really went down i can come back on this thread and let you guys know so it wont happen to you in the near future.

+1 on this. Ford absolutely does not need to know you don't have insurance. You need to tell them this is in no way yours or your insurance company's fault, and there's no way, on God's green earth, that you or insurance should be paying for this. They will try and deny it, but you will tell them you will find a lawyer whose had experience in dealing with total loss fires due to manufacturer defects. Bring a list of all recalls associated with spontaneous engine fires on Ford vehicles (there are a few). Especially focus on any other stories with the newer Mustang's. Explain that this may very well be the beginning of a recall and that this is a great opportunity for Ford to show they are trying to be proactive in protecting the lives and property of their customers.

Of course, you'll be telling all this to Ford and not the dealer. If they mention your mods, tell them to stuff it. They have to PROVE your tune or exhaust caused a spontaneous engine fire under the Magnuson-Moss Act. Whether they prove it or not (they won't... they'll try to bully you), tell them that the public will not care. They'll be seeing Ford Mustangs catching fire and that WILL hurt sales.

No problem...I just hope that Ford figures this out and takes care of it...they don"t have such a great track record of taking care of problems or their customers (ie: water intrusion problem, gas fill problem, countless more TSBs that should be fixed free of charge, but Ford chooses to deny the problems until the warranty runs out, then they are more than happy to charge you to fix their defect).

Like I said, document EVERYTHING! Save that YouTube video link, and see if you can contact the poster of it to get info from the owner of the car. Talk to the other person in this thread (via PM) to see if you can get the info from them too. Search online to find any and all similar occurrences of this happening to same gen Mustangs. The more people that this has happened to, the more people that will be going to Ford demanding a resolution, and the faster that it will be made right. Also threaten, and if necessary, go to the press. Nothing will motivate Ford faster than to have a full blown press campaign saying that Mustangs spontaneously combust, and having thousands of owners calling them afraid that their brand new $30,000 car will burn down, possibly taking their house and their lives with it.

Also, if you haven't already, take lots of high res pics of every part of your car. If you can, id like you to send them to me.

The other person who I've heard of with the problem couldn't get ford or her insurance to pay for it so she had to get a lawyer and she had to stop posting updates on the thread. Might as well save yourself some time and get a lawyer now. Also it's best if your Lawyer talks to everyone involved, don't even call ford yourself. you don't want to say something stupid to ruin your case. Their lawyers will twist whatever you say around on you. It'll cost less for them if their lawyers simply deny you fire coverage than to give you a new car, that's what ford pays them for.

also you shouldn't have even made this thread or discussed this with anyone but a lawyer.

Yes, it would be best to be cautious what you post, and once you do get a lawyer, they will advise you not to post info publicly. But you should try to contact them privately. If none of these people share information, then nothing will be done about it.

You should, however share some info, simply to help try to prevent this from happening to other people...
