I was wondering what you naturally aspirated, Coyote guys are running at the track for motor oil weight. I did a search and found most of the info was relevant to the 3v4.6...

I'm inquiring because a few weekend back a couple of people asked me, and I all I got were confused looks when I told them, "umm... whatever is recommended - 5W20."

5w20 seems a little on the thin side for open track use, in my opinion. Do you have an oil cooler?

I'm no oil pro, but the answer is going to be dependant on how hard you're running it, how often, your climate, etc. If you are just doing a track day here and there and not beating the absolute snot out of it, 5w20 may be just fine.
Personally, I'd go with 10w30 for track days unless you are redlining every shift for 2 hours+ a day in 110* heat.

And keep it fresh.

This can start into another oil debate so I will say that I run 5w-30 for the track in my 4.6l. Only have met a couple guys that track the Coyote and more at the autocross events but the same thinks there as well, 5w-30.

I recently changed to 10w-30. I have an air/oil cooler and a fluidyne radiator.

It's hard to get away from $23 5quart jugs of Mobil 1 from Wal Mart, especially when the car takes almost 10 quarts. I'm sending in oil samples post track time to see how bad it shears.

FWIW - all our coyote motor cars run 5w50 Motorcraft oil. We can run whatever we want, but we've always seen the best and most consistent results using this oil.

Motul 300V 15W-50, Mobil 1 5W-50, Mobil 1 0W-40. Depending on the season and amount of track running I am doing. At the height of the season when I am doing multiple 3 day track weekends I run the Motul, Spring and fall, M1 5W-50, winter change and exercise M1 0W-40.

Steve, do you have the '11 Coyote engine (with piston squirters?)

Yes. 23800 miles, 5600 on track, burns zero (negligible) oil since new. I change after 6 track hours or 5000 miles which ever comes first. Been using Ford Racing FL 820 filters.

Good to know. I've read some strong convictions proclaiming imminent death to the piston squirter engines with anything more than 5w-20.

I've read that TiVCT is designed to work with 5W20 only too, oh the Boss runs 5W-50, and the Track Pack cars run 5W-50, must be specially engineered cam phasers, yeah right. I spin the engine to 7400, with 7500 rpm redline too.

Would you be willing to supply a little more detail about this? In particular, I'm interested in what specific engines you're using (what year? What platform?), what other oils you've tried, what measurements you're using for judging the performance of the oils, what metrics you're using to judge the end results, and what the end results of each were.

This is, after all, a tech forum, so let's get at least somewhat technical! :)

I've seen a lot of discussion in other forums about which oils to use in the Coyote engines for tracking, and seen a lot of derision flung at MC 5W50. I'm not convinced that said derision is well-deserved, and your experience seems to back my skepticism on that.

Motorcraft Oil isn't all that great, regardless of the viscosity. I'd use Mobil 1 5w50 over the MC stuff.

What sort of problems have people had with it?

I suspect I'll change to something better myself once my warranty has expired, but not until then unless there's solid evidence that sticking with MC 5W50 on a heavily tracked car during the warranty period will cause longevity issues for the engine. Note that I'll not be doing any performance mods to the engine other than perhaps the Ford Racing normally-aspirated power upgrade, since that does preserve the warranty. And since I'm in the evil Republic of California, I have to keep it smog-legal as well...

Since my main two uses of the car will be as a daily driver and as a track toy, I'm not going to be trying to make a bunch more power from the car than it already does (and certainly have no intention of supercharging it since that will put a bunch more weight in the front of an already front-heavy car), since it seems the car has plenty of power for the track. And since I'm not in it to be competitive, but to just have fun, I don't even have to worry about eking out every last bit of handling performance out of the car, either. A good compromise will be just fine.

The bottom line is that I see no reason to believe that the MC 5W50 oil is going to be unsuitable for my uses, at least during the warranty period. But as always, I remain open minded about it. I'm willing to be convinced by evidence. Nothing less will suffice for that, however.
